INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Skipping a few pages. I am going to sell my sportsman and my metal brooder box. It looks like I will be leaving the chicken and other poultry world for a while.
I'll second @ellymayRans ; if there's anything you think I can do, let me know. I know times are tough (for everyone). I can't buy anything right now, but I could foster some of the lighter-weight eaters for awhile and/or help find homes for some. I know the Sumatra (and the Sumatra mix) have been really good here. The birchen boy has been courting my CX hens, so I might even get to see some day if a Sumatra/CX mix is as studly a bowling ball as a CX could ever possibly be (the EE/Sumatra mix at @jchny2000 's is LOVELY). By all means, if you can find buyers for them, that's great (really!), but if you think you may get into it again or just want to find a good home for some of them (and reduce your feed bill), I can take a few in.

BTW, is the temperament of the Sumatras going to get nasty come spring, and should I build pens for these boys, just in case?

The sumatra's like to mate both the hens and the roos. The roos don't like to share so a pen of all spare roosters is fine but 2 roosters in a pen with 25 hens might still have a few spats. JCHNY2000 is working out the details but it looks like you might get a breeding set to foster and hatch from until I'm better able to care for the birds. No promises on when that will be.

Thank you so much to everyone who has offered their help in one way or another. If anyone knows of a work at home job or a take your infant to work job, I'm interested. Childcare for my children would just kill a paycheck. If I was at home I could have some assistance or at least cheaper child care while I worked. Right now I'm open to suggestions.

Check into Anthem. I work there in IT but I know we have a ton of work at home associates. You should be able to check out job opportunities on their website.

Write. Get a blog and write for it. Get into fiction and/or non-fiction. You know a lot about chickens and turkeys, but you're also a mom, and so you can write and/or blog about any of those (and lots of ladies make a living at least in part on doing just this). It takes awhile to get going on that kind of a business, but work at networking with other women bloggers and writers. Most work-from-home opportunities are utter scams, so avoid those unless someone you know pretty well forwards that kind of job your way. You can also work in childcare or babysit for others in your area.

Is that year-round or just during the spring and summer? My older boy's been trying to mate the bigger ladies (esp the CX) but hasn't been too forceful about it, and I think he's intimidated by the two Dark Brahma boys (who are easily twice his size). The only spats he's had were with hens over the food bowl (I think he was trying to court them, but they didn't know him). Nothing resembling damage on anyone, and everyone's adjusted really easily and quickly, altogether.

So if I'm not breeding a group of boys, it's okay to just stick 'em all in one pen with no girls? I was thinking of taking in a few of the boys at Janet's just to keep them from being wastefully processed and trying to generate some local demand for the breed. After all, I don't know how anyone can see these boys without wanting one for their very own!

I've started a trend of keeping handsome birds on the premises, so now I've got a bunch of neighbors starting backyard flocks (and my boys aren't even the noisiest of the group!). Really hoping I can generate some interest here for them. I know of one person that keeps (or kept) RIR, but given his flock, I don't think he would have been into paying heritage prices (or care so long as they laid eggs, which seemed to be what that household was going for). My Latino neighbors take great pride in their gorgeous roosters though, so I'm hoping that some high profile displays of a really gorgeous bird might interest them in the breed (what other purpose than fun would cause someone to keep a handful of OEGBs, after all).

I am looking for EE's and Marans adults first chicks second or last hatching eggs. I have one black copper Maran and one EE but lost the roosters for both and would like at least 3-hens of each to add the color to the egg basket. If any one has any they would like to sell please PM me. I am hoping to have my renovations done to my coop in a couple weeks and would like to add them then.

Many at home jobs are phone jobs - seems great until you find out that most employers want you to be able to have a room away from any distractions & noises- difficult with kids, almost impossible with a baby - noise canceling gear can only do so much. Don't want to discourage you - just be aware, b/c I have looked into it, that I pretty much gave up any anything on the phone - I just wasn't willing to do it only in the middle of the night. My SIL did medical coding from home - she did have to take classes to do that.

Could always hatch chicks and sale them and make money that way might need to come down on your prices to sale more though... When I have issues selling I send them to auction and they alway are sold there.. Sometime for more most times for less

I have 2 Marans hens. One has nice color and lays daily, the other has a high tail set and is going through a molt. $35 each for the hens. I also have 4 Birchen Marans chicks 2 weeks old- $20 each or $60 for all 4 (they are straight run)
