Peas live a long time and do need to eat a good quality protein food. I will continue to send her funds to help also. Aside from her daily activities for her family. Lot on her plate right now. I am sure she needs our help to be able to cover costs to care for and feed these birds.

The chicks in the picture appear to be whats called "huddling". I would increase the heat, if they chill they won't thrive.

Hi, all! Been sick with a nasty cold the past few days with a lot of light sensitivity, so as one might expect, I haven't been on the computer much. Sorry if I missed anything directed toward me! I just wanted to follow up on what I have found in regards to Muscovy genetics.

Chocolate in Muscovies is sexlinked recessive as I guessed, meaning females can only carry one allele at most and males can carry one or two.
Lavender is also recessive, but not sexlinked; both sexes can carry either one or two alleles and the gene will only express if two alleles are carried.
Since both are recessive, this means that in order to get ANY lavenders or chocolates out of a lavender male over a chocolate female, one or both must be carrying one allele of the other gene. In other words, the lavender would have to be split to chocolate in order for any of the ducklings to be chocolate, and the chocolate would have to be split to lavender in order for any of the ducklings to be lavender. Otherwise, all or most of what you would get is blacks out of this crossing.

Genetics is a baffling concept and you really have to have the mindset for it (or the determination to keep going until you figure it out!) so no guarantees that any of these will be easy to understand, just easier than most, I think.

Now, as much as I'd rather sit and focus on poultry genetics all night, I have two tests tomorrow that I need to study more (read: cram) for, and my head is killing me at this point.

Well I didn't get a whole lot of nothing done yesterday!! The hay man showed and DUMPED the round bales in the front yard!! He couldn't get his trk and trl to the back, it was too big

now we have to push all those by hand to the back, it's not a short distance either!!!!!! and with DH's knee..... I sure hope I can get his boys over here before DH messes his leg up more.
Got the horses feet did... lol I like that saying, my momma says she gets her hair did all the time.
The people that were supposed to come clean the garage out... they NEVER showed an they didn't even call!!!!!!! Thy wount be getting any word of mouth advertising from me that's for sure. Not a good way to start a new business.
I didn't get to work on the shed coop due to waiting around for everyone to show and get all that done.
I guess I should be happy about what is done, and stop worrying about what isn't.
I called and got a dumpster to be sat today around noon and we will just do it ourselves. Not really saving allot cause for the real hevy stuff DH will pay a couple of the kids to come help.
I need some Harriet therapy.

I thought this was kind of a cool idea and worthy of sharing. These people bolted together some old tires, filled the inside and bottom with spray insulation and put a bucket inside. They said the black tire takes the sun's warmth and even on frigid days the water stays mostly ice free. I'm not sure where they are located or if it would work quite as well here, but kind of a neat idea for those that don't have electricity to give the water a bit more time without freezing.

Roosters are still available but the pullets are gone. @jchny2000 Plans to come this weekend to get all of my remaining birds. So now is the time if you are wanting a rooster to eat or even just protect your flock when free ranging.

Ugh, those round bales sure aren't light either! I put the forks on the tractor to move them around.

Aww I miss my Salmon Faverolles girl so much! I lost her this summer to the coyote (assuming). Had her for 5 years and she was still laying and still fertile! She was such a sweetheart. I can't wait until spring to get my new batch as well as adding the Russian Orloffs! Woot woot!!

Sumatra are very attractive, and the fellas I have are really good to the hens.

I ditto this! My two Sumatra/mixes are very sweet with the girls (at least the older one is; younger one hasn't hit that stage yet). Super pretty. Matter of fact, he's so pretty, the other roosters don't know what to do with him and occasionally try to show off for him

By the way, @SallyinIndiana , do you know what your birchen and blue birchen Sumatra boys are mixed with? I'm thinking the gold birchen single comb mix might be BSL/Sumatra (he has the gold-laced neck and brilliant fiery eyes), but only time will tell.
