INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Facing another round with my Mom at the heart hospital. She was to have a torn rotator cup repaired that lead to regular pre op evaluation. They found she had a murmur in 2 heart valves, 1 is severe. Totally a shock. So now the rotator cup surgeries are off the table. Since she is on dialysis, was turned down as an open heart candidate for surgery, there is an intravienous procedure that may be done. More tests... I can tell Mom is tired of tests.
Her only option due to her health, so we are waiting for the next CT scan of her veins to see if the procedure is even possible. Dr. Storey asked me to please get a 2nd surgeons opinion. I will absolutely do so, and I really trust this Doctor knowing his stuff. He has saved my dads and oldest brothers life the last 2 years, just an amazing surgeon. If not, Mom will go into hospice as this type of heart disease is fast and fatal.
Please, pray for my Mom, Sally Miller. Mom and Dad have been married 57 years.

My babies sure don't know what to think of this wind!!! It's blowing all the little bantams around. I guess it's a lesson in flying today!!!

I just hope all the winter preps we did over the weekend aren't ruined. We put up plastic sheeting on most of the open areas on the coops. Just left some openings for ventilation. The wind is so fierce here it is coming in those openings and pushing against the plastic. I guess we will see if the plastic is going to stand up to the winter. One gust was so strong it actually blew one of the pen doors open and it has a latch. I guess it didn't get pushed down all the way last night.

I'm gonna have to start going out myself and making sure everything is shut up tight.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Petty boys both.. Too bad they weren't hens, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I always get more roo's then hens. I often wonder if the old saying is true? ya know about a more pointy or oblong egg being Roo's. should try throwing those in the eating basket and hatching the rounder ones to see what happens. Maybe that can be a project next summer???

@chickiebaby1 The wind has been causing problems around here as well, cant wait till it passes. Been lucky so far that the siding for my shed coop hasn't flew away. I have it all laid flat with some weight on it to help hold it down but was scared to put too much on it for fear it may bend the panels. All my kids have been hiding under and behind things most the time, I know they cant wait for this too be over, I cant either...

If the past 2 days have been any indication I'm not going to do well AT ALL this winter... I'm already wanting to break out the heavy winter clothes. I'm freezing!!

Redgitt the rescue horse update: She is almost healed up and is not limping at all anymore, yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going to have front shoes put on her with some kind of winter pad next week. Anyone with horses ever use these pads before? It is supposed to keep the snow and ice from building up in the frog area??? I sure hope it works. I hate digging snow and ice balls out of their feet!! It's bad enough without shoes.
Started her on Finish Line Fluid Action Wednesday, along with Biotin & Pro-Add. The Kopper Tox that the vet said to start using till her feet harden up a bit ... he said it was a jell....... found out the HARD way it's NOT!!!! I now have a shirt and a pair of sweets that are just for medicating with messy meds... They are stained Green, my hands and leg where it soaked through my pants are Green STILL!!! And so is the hair line above her foot... Really shows up on that white horse.. lol And Man does that stuff STINK!!!!!

Even after washing your hands 100 times!!! So if anyone has to use it... put on rubber gloves and an apron!!!

Lost 1 of my newly started Welsummer Pullets yesterday to UNknown causes, and 1 of DH's BO chicks to a dang hawk... The chick had started flying the coop so to speck. I had put it back 3 or 4 times already and I thought I had the area built up enough that she couldn't get out the last time. But I was wrong and it cost her her life. So we are down to 3 BO's.

Stupid dog owner put up more chain link!! Guess it finally sunk in!! Just wish I hadn't lost birds before he got the bill for 3. Didn't even charge him for the first ones. I'll never see any money, it was just a way for me to " smack '" him into waking up!!!! Guess it worked.

Hit a snag on getting our own place so guess that is on hold, AGAIN!!! I hate this place, want out of here so bad. Its bad when you have 1 neighbor that wont watch his dog ( that is remedied I hope ), 1 that calls the AC on us when ever we get a rescue in, and 1 that packs a 357 on her hip WHENEVER she is out in the yard and shouts it's time someone else lives in fear!!!! OK I'll go get my gun... shot over in this direction!!! I dare ya...We'll have an old west shoot out. ok sorry I went into a small rant, I'm over it.

1 thing for sure with this wind I found a couple of drafty spots in the layer coop.
Got our round bales in for the winter ( we hope ) now we re working on sq bales... found some close, but WOW they must have gold nuggets hid in them!!

DH has been looking for a saddle for 2 years, I have heard, it's too small, it's too big, too much tooling, too plain, too dark, too light, don't feel good, too thin , too thick, don't fit the horse don't fit the butt.

I was ready to rip my hair out!!!!!! He FOUND one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wont be bald now... and talk about too dark...

oh well he has 1 and now I can relax....

Yes, the snow ball pads work great. Your horse will appreciate them.

I'll be praying for her and you as I'm sure this is very hard on you too.

So since my polish flock plan fell through I'm thinking of making a misfit flock because I have 1 white created polish 1 ee 1 Araucana and 1 mix (buff with unknown) any one know if these breeds will be ok together they all seem really smart the mix is about 9 months old and a bit territorial

Quote: As long as you are under about 40, it should be fine. you can always add ice to keep it cooler. The last couple of years have been cooler than this year, so I didn't have to worry about it.

Okay, broody and gamecock in my room was not the greatest idea ever (it was just what I was limited to at the moment). Now everyone's downstairs in the giant dog crate (mom, three chicks and the ex-fighting bird).

He actually has a splendid temperament now that he's calmed down a bit. If I had a free-range flock, he'd be the boy to watch them (my boys are great with kids, but they're pansies against threats). His feathers are coming back in pretty well, and he's now eating regular chicken feed (yay!). He's quite driven to perch. He's proved excellent where his manners with ladies are concerned, a most chivalrous man, indeed! He takes all kinds of flack from the broody, but will beat himself bloody against the wires to get at the other roosters. Once caught (he puts up less fight about it every day), he is easily held and doesn't fight at all. He also doesn't poop on me when I'm holding him, which is great.

If nobody here wants him, I'll have to process him because I just can't have a rooster in my house all the time. It's not fair to him for him to be stuck inside. I don't have a pen that I could trust against him yet, and with the way things have been here, that might not happen til spring (or later).

@racinchickins When you get poults, lemme know!
It will be spring. Turkeys stopped laying over a month ago. I currently only have one poult, but it is a MW and promised to Jchny2000

MWs are even more preferred in some ways, so I guess I'll just have to bug some poults off @jchny2000 this spring....

I'm into turkeys for personality (and yummy eggs), but the BBBreeds just suck me dry for food costs and have such a tiny life expectancy.

Geez I really wish I could have found me a Blue Slate hen before DDAY because I love them! I love the MWs too don't get me wrong but I'd much rather have pretty blues. ..
Today. .they are pretty decent size.
I haven't weighed them though so that's yet to be seen.
