INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My children made a tiny Jack o lantern this morning from a pumpkin from Sherri.  She was kind enough to help babysit my children all day Monday and give them a pumpkin.    My girl is now wanting me to save the seeds to make more pumpkins.  I've washed the seeds and they are now drying.  While gardening is not my thing, I think my girl loves it so maybe we will be planting a pumpkin patch next spring.    I know she wants to plant flowers in two broken wheel barrels.   She is my little gardener.

My mom has never been into gardening but I absolutely love it! Probably from my great grandmother always having one. I got a fun squash from a house selling them near the Peacock rescue site. Saved some seeds and placed them on the greenhouse to dry out...well..guess who found them!!?? Rocky, my big turd of a peacock! He was roosted on top of it and they were all gone!

I still have 1 pumpkin from the place that we didn't carve. So I'll be trying them again next year. Before when growing them or watermelon, as soon as the got about the size of a small basketball my dog would tear them off the vine and playing with them. Now that he's older I think he'll probably leave them be??

I've had problems with them getting to volleyball size and then having bugs kill the vines. I've seen more negative than positive about birds being in your garden, but I usually have to make tunnels out of chicken wire to keep squirrels and rabbits from getting my tomato and pepper plants anyway, so I'm just going to do what I normally do, and once things are more established, let the ladies have at it. I'll take a little fruit loss if I can keep some of the pests down.

I think that I also have enough hay to get through winter, first year ever! My awesome new neighbors offered to let me store 200 bales in their barn since I couldn't get enough in mine, so I no longer have to worry about a mid winter buy! City people do not understand how stressful hay worries are!
That was very nice of your neighbors. Anyone that don't have livestock ( Grazers ) don't understand, but that's ok cause when we fill our barns and are not running around like crazy people looking for hay in the coldest mths, it wont matter anyway... we will be Happy peeps!!!

So let them look at us like we are crazy. lol I am so happy about it I want to have a party!!!!!!!!

Whine and moan time--having a heck of a time trying to get everyone settled for winter. Had big plans for yesterday; up and at it early (difficult for me--I'm a night person). All was going well until I took a break in the recliner. Got up and my bum knee didn't support me, so down I went and hit my temple on the corner of a wooden hassock. My sis and niece got me and took me to the ER; had a CT scan and they decided I hadn't really knocked myself silly, so sent me home. Today I have one beautiful shiner and some bruises I didn't notice before but thankful that it wasn't more than that. So yesterday was a bust and today the rains came; did well to get everyone fed and watered between drops.
On a more positive note--a couple of weeks ago a friend came over to hunt in my woods; he's been coming since he was a kid and now comes with his own sons. Anyhow, he decided that I needed coops built in one of my sheds, so started coming to hunt in the morning, build coops during the day, and hunt again in the evening. Found most of the materials around here--only had to buy 3 sheets of plywood and some nails. So now I have cozy indoor pens for all of my bantams, and am I ever grateful!

I'll post pics when I get around to taking them.

Well Yesterday afternoon about 1 pm I went to check on the tarp that we had over the roof of the unfinished shed coop..... It was a mess!! The tarp had blown off and the metal sheeting was scattered all over the yard and pasture, the floor was soaked as was all the tools and hardware that we left inside cause we THOUGHT we had it tarped off well enough that it would be ok. and it was about to rain again!! The sky was warning me!!!
So I got on the phone and called in the troops..... DAS and DAD ( adopted son and daughter ) and we got to work on the clean up and putting the roof on... ever tried that in the wind??? NOT fun at all.
We got all the pieces and parts picked up and wiped off
barnie.gif
DUMB move!!! wiped the part numbers right off!!

This thing wasnt hard enough already I had to go and make it worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So we had to do the trial and error thing......... had that roof on and back off again 3 times!! DH got home from work early and only after we had finally figured it out.

check out that sky.
As you can see we had to put shavings down to soak up all the water, it worked real well too. But 3/4 of my shavings are now gone that I was going to use on the floor WHEN it was done. So now got to get another bag.

once again we worked till after dark ( thank goodie for work lights ) But we got it on, and we got the doors together and on and we have extra parts!! That can't be good! they were to anchor to a concrete floor so we'll all good. DH says he will find some use for them. I think this is how we got 2 dumpsters of junk in the garage!!!!!

Anyway will get pic's of the finished shed in the daylight. Now for the coop part.. got to be easier than putting this thing together. NEVER NEVER again!!!! The next one will be already put together or I will HIRE someone to do it FOR us!!

You might have noticed the floor not painted... we are going to coat the whole thing with that spray on truck bed liner stuff, the traction kind, DH's ideal, I wanted paint and then linoleum, but... oh well!! he will see after hearing me complain about cleaning it...

I am SOOO VERY GLAD this part is over!! I cant wait to get the perches and all in it and put the kids in their new home....

I have one of those sheds, it was free and already assembled. Its worked out great for my grow up pen. I have put up 4 or 5 of them, wind makes it really hard to assemble.

Quote: So not kidding! I am hoping what we have coming tomorrow will cover us too. I hate searching for hay in the winter, what a huge pain.

I fed my hogs pumpkins last few years and always find freebees growing in the empty pen next spring. I love the flowery wheelbarrows. just so cute!

Quote: Thats so thoughtful of them!

Quote: For sure. My hogs love green forage and get really excited over corn stalks too.

Quote: LOL.. hope so, but don't count on it!

Yikes! Glad you are ok but thats gonna be sore. I have a bad knee form wrecking a dirt bike, I can relate. Sometimes it just doesn't want to work, cold damp weather really messes with it.
That was very thoughtful of your friend!

I'm so glad you're ok! Falling is never fun and always hurts!! Hugs!

What a wonderful thing for him to do for you! I want to hug him too! ;)

Downsizing. Ugh I don't enjoy it but has to be done. Makes a full freezer and happy hogs. Saturday is the "bad day" for turkeys here. There's 3 toms planned for family dinners, one for my awesome neighbors family.
Glad the rain is ending so I can keep working on our new paddocks. Fanny (my cow) is sure enjoying all the pasture. She almost wants to drag me in the morning when I start putting her and my goats out for the day. Lots of "whoa" she i just so excited to see where we are going. I move her to different areas daily so she has plenty of forage. It must be funny seeing me walking her out in the morning, she is just so big and sweet. She has taken to rubbing her head against me, and likes her ears and neck scratched. Daisy (my donkey) is so patient. She lets me get Fanny settled and patiently waits for her turn to come out of their corral too.
Both have developed a good relationship with my goats. They have chicken friends already that take rides, its too cute. My white EE roo adores Daisy and follows her everywhere.
Getting out my stock tank heaters and will be testing them with the cold coming this weekend. Hoping both are still in working order. will be testing the heated dog water buckets too for the flocks and waterfowl. Dread the carrying water, we keep adding heated buckets every year. Hoping we have enough to finally be past that.

O ... I forgot those... guess I better get them out and see if mine still work. I couldn't make it through the winter without them, don't know how I could have forgotten???

Well mt last 2 girls went to the vet and got fixed yesterday, the pup is already up and about but the older one isn't taking it well at all. She has been crying all night, going to call the vet in the morning if she is still in pain. This is the first dog that has ever reacted this way. And believe me I have had plenty of dogs spayed before her. It may be cause of her back too I don't know?? But going to find out. This is the same dog that got hit by the car and broke her back and the vet wanted to remove 1 leg and her tail cause he didn't believe she would ever be able to use them again, she had a long recovery but she walks with a limp but walks, and she can wag her tail just enough that you know she' doing it. Hope I didn't mess her up worse by making her go thru the surgery. She didn't cry like this when she got her back broke.

Now I have to start on the boys!!! Joy Joy, 2 are over 100 lbs and going to cost an arm and a leg.

After all the fuss getting this darn shed and the time we put into it...... It LEAKS!!! buckets of water.. not just a little bit.... buckets!!!
My floor is going to be trashed. I wish he would have let me paint it and put the flooring down.

Aw bummer, hope your shed isn't too hard to fix. Hope your dog is okay.
