INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We had a deluge of snow also! Forgot to take in my solar fence charger and went sprinting out there yesterday after the fact....still a bit sore from sprinting in 9" of snow!

Beekeeping...
I'm not doing it yet but have lots of book knowledge :)

I'm "in love" with the cathedral hive
http://www.backyardhive.com/the_cathedral_hive_the_next_evolution_in_top_bar_hive_design/ at backyard bees but don't want to spend that much money. Probably it's top bars for us. They do sell the plans for the cathedral, but I know us and we'll still be talking about building it 5 years from now.

So unless I purchase one made - or hire someone to make one for me from the plans, it probably won't happen!

I have seen that hive in australia that they're supposedly testing. But I have deep reservations about it - especially used in cold areas. Besides just generally being a bit skeptical, I don't like using plastic or pre-formed comb. I think the top bars (or the cathedral) style is really more natural for them. I've read the full volume of Bush's "Natural Beekeeping" and have studied the various types of hives.... Just haven't put any in yet.

Quote: I know no one wants a stranger yelling at their children but to call the police or CPS seems a bit extreme. Making a noise complaint maybe something to consider, maybe a polite note asking the neighbor to stop correcting the children and to get their parents instead. Something along the lines of: I have noticed you getting upset with my children lately. I would prefer that you come to me with any issues concerning my child's behavior instead of directly informing then that they are wrong.

Well I had to unplug 2 tank heaters tonight. They kept popping the breaker, so now I will have to go out everyday and bust someones water put the heater in thaw and repeat, going to suck.

all summer I got from 24 to 30 eggs as a normal thing, then fall it dropped to 12 to 16. Then yesterday I went out and ALL of them laid an egg. now you watch... today I wont get nothing... lol
I have my goat water tank heater that I turn on in the mornings and turn off later depending on weather. No point in keeping that water thawed during the night. Last year on the days I forgot to turn it off, the water actually started steaming out of the tank and it was more work to fill the tank up. At least I can see the water tank from my kitchen window so I don't forget about it.

Im not really the type to call police :). The kids werent doing anything wrong, they were playing tug of war and giggling and laughing. It was 4 in the afternoon on a Saturday so no reason why they couldnt play. He didnt see me standing in the garage door watching them. When he yelled I came out the door and told him until he pays my property taxes and house payment those kids can play as loudly as they want on my property. He went back in the house :). He can yell at little children but not a mad mama. It doesnt matter much, I will be moving in a couple months.

I agree Daskhsan. Ive met a few people just through giving little roosters away, my husband works with two people that also have small farms and no one in my area is on here. (I'm still not sure where you are lol). What gets me the most though is theres hardly anyone in this area doing any kind of farming. We are out of town, theres no zoning in this county yet my neighbors complain to the county commision about my gardens and animals, instead of raising their own food. They are only interested in pretty yards. Drives me crazy

.

Can you remind me where you are. I live in southern Indiana too. I live in the Mitchell/Williams area. DO you know that area. There's not too many on here from my area either.

Will be away a few days, have 3 large turkeys and 2 large family gatherings to cook for. My biggest turkey fella is 41 pounds dressed so far, have 2 more to weigh. If I can't post before Thanksgiving please know... I wish my good friends and extended family here on our thread a blessed Thanksgiving gathering. Appreciate the time you have with those you love most. It may change tomorrow.

Oh trust me chickrookie, I rant eniugh for both of us

. Told the one neighbor last time he complained saying my chickens were going to"stink up the neighborhood" that I pay the roperty taxes here and if he dont like it he.ahould have moved somewhere with an HOA. Hes actually had the nerve to sit on his front porch and scream at my kids to shut up when they were playing in my yard. His own kids sit inside playing video games nonstop.

And gee! Ton of eggs! Lol. Ill probably never get that many.

Daskhan- we used to be an hour and a half straight south of Indy. Before all of the construction on 37. Now it takes nearly two hours just to get to Martinsville lol. Everything north of Kentucky and south of Michigan seems to be under construction

Y do people like that exist? My favorite saying I use quite a bit to people like that is " Someone really needs to pull that silver spoon out of your butt " most the time they shut up and go away.

I am doing that.. I leave the horse tank plugged in at night and plug in the goats tank in the day time after unplugging the horse tank. Got to thinking that I already have heaters in the water, Y not just leave them and do the plug and unplug instead of breaking ice and just using 1 heater??? I'm a little slow sometimes .. lol
