INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Please do your homework and don't purchase grains/seeds for you animal feed unless you KNOW they aren't "treated". Those of you that purchase sunflower seeds - this is a huge issue. Call the packagers/manufacturers and ask for certification that they have not been treated in any way before feeding.

Thank you for this info. I had feed made at a feed store a couple of months ago and it had sunflower seeds in it. I was trying to get a feed with more protein for winter, but my birds did not like the sunflower seeds maybe they "knew" it wasn't good for them.

Had some new stuff made last weekend and they eat that stuff up.

Just a question.... Would it be ok to feed either all flock or meatbird over the winter to keep the protein higher. as long as I provided oyster shell for the ladies?

Will be away a few days, have 3 large turkeys and 2 large family gatherings to cook for. My biggest turkey fella is 41 pounds dressed so far, have 2 more to weigh. If I can't post before Thanksgiving please know... I wish my good friends and extended family here on our thread a blessed Thanksgiving gathering. Appreciate the time you have with those you love most. It may change tomorrow.

I can't imagine what size pan you use for a 41 pound turkey!

I can hardly fit a 22-pounder in my biggest pan with all the racks removed from the oven. Please TAKE PICTURES--INCLUDING in your oven. I'm going to be amazed!!!

We had a sad loss last night. She was beautiful and one of my favorite birds. Aretha, our oldest bird, was a crested cream legbar. She wasn't quite 3.

She was going through a very, very hard molt. Seems like she just laid down, went to sleep, and didn't get up. Anybody ever lost one just because the molt was too much on them? It sounds ridiculous, since they're all pets and treated very well.

I don't think the guy we bought the CCL from had very good stock. I wish I could remember his name, so I don't buy from him again. We bought 4 started pullets--lost the first one a few weeks after we got them, lost the second two months later, now we lost the third a year later. We have only one left. She's 2 1/2.

I don't think chickens cross the rainbow bridge, but she's for sure at the farm in the dell... There's lots of green pasture there. RIP Aretha.

Sorry to hear that.

I did have a bird with a heavy molt last year just when it got very cold. She was virtually naked.

I brought her into a heated area until she finished in a dog kennel. I believe she would have died if I hadn't since there was no way for her to "fluff up" her down - since she was naked. Temps were in the teens - it was that strange, quick, temperature drop that lasted a couple weeks last year.

Hi.  I'm looking to  purchase a few egg laying chicks less than 6 weeks old before Christmas, but don't know where to look near Indianapolis.  Any ideas?

I have 4 Black Copper Marans that are about two weeks old and 5 Sulmtaler chicks that are about 5 weeks old. I would like to sell all 9 together. PM me if interested. The Sulmtalers are straight from Greenfire Farms. I won them in a rare breed auction. I hatched the BCM but I have 3 bloodlines already and I don't want to mix these in.
