INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

After closer review it said you get the money back in store credit so I guess I can't pay for it but if you reimburse me I can do it you keep the store credit it gets sent to you on a card... Thought I was going to be chicken Santa clause ugh lol

I think all of the rural kings are doing it. I know Bloomington and Bedford are. It was very tempting Sunday morning lol.

@jcny20200 and @SallyinIndiana

I agree that AI might be a good solution. I know someone that has Jersey A2/A2 straws from New Zealand that might sell some. Great genetics and if you get a heiffer you would have a great replacement for the future!

Let me know if you'd be interested in checking and I'll find out prices. You'd have to find someone in your area that does the actual "deed".
Please do. I will have my vet do it probably.

Nothing like doing a head count in the evening and missing one hen....I've looked everywhere!! Barns, bushes, garage, fields ,everywhere and she is no where to be found!

What do you all do when you are missing a hen!?
Glad she is safe!

Hello All!

I am on the hunt for nice quality buff or porcelain Silkie cockerel or roo.

We would consider a trio
or even buff and porcelain chicks if that's the only option.

Would prefer to pick up (or meet somewhere) - we're in Harrison County
we would consider shipped birds/chicks depending on quality/price.

Thanks for looking!

Welcome if I haven't said it already!
The Big R in Warsaw has signs up for BO, EE, BR, ISA Browns, and amber sex links. Chicks delivering on 2/22
Thanks for the chick radar report!

I thought somebody here was looking for SLWs. If so, here's some on CL.

And here are some nice looking buff silkie pullets: https://indianapolis.craigslist.org/grd/5455768473.html
Thanks for sharing!

I wouldn't pack up the winter gear yet all.

Next Saturday looks to usher in some wicked cold air that is going to hang around well into the next week. Weather models are putting single digits across much of the state for next Sun/Mon/Tues. It could be holding on a little further than that even but the models don't go out any further.

I'm ready for spring, but I'm more concerned because my chicks are set to be hatched the 29th and shipped during the heart of the cold streak. Hoping that goes well.

Just a heads up.
Ugh yea, we are supposed to get rain to snow Wed.

Hi all.
We all survived the wind storm friday - a dead pine tree blew down & luckily the dead ash didnt, or would of hit the house.
Power out fri nite til sat mid-afternoon - had to get the generator goin' & plugged in fridge + freezer, and also the incubator. Ran out of gas early sat morning for a little while - added some more & restarted . Incubator dropped aprox 20°F, but went back up to temp . Had one egg pipped this am, so hopefully will have a couple fuzzies later today/tonite.
. . . . . & just for fun - a recent pix of Brownie, or Charcoal IowaBlue pullet:

@iamfivewire
Glad the tree didn't come down on your house! We have a neighbor here that had a huge (maple I think) come down right between garage (not attached) and house. Hit their honda in the driveway and gave it a good smashing but missed the buildings it appears.

Gorgeous! I can relate, we had a cottonwood fall, narrowly missed 2 cars. Been a lot of cleanup this weekend.
1 chick hatched & 1 pipped. 3rd egg not due for 7 more days
(will update some baby pix later)
Woohoo!

I have a couple volunteer mulberry trees growing in the litter under a big pine tree in my yard. My plan was to cut them back, but I started thinking yesterday that maybe I should just transplant one or both to the area planned for the new chicken run. Thoughts?
I think its a great idea! I personally love mulberries. There was a big one in our yard growing up, and I would climb that tree and eat them right off the tree, lol.

Babies!
My sassy Fayoumi, Marama, jumped the 6' fence into our dog yard during free-range this afternoon. Our dogs have never been trustworthy with the chickens, and Marama didn't stand a chance in there with them. I'm so heartbroken all over again. Miss Attitude, herself. My flock feels so much smaller once again.

I am so sorry pipd. My DD lost a large portion of her flock this weekend also. The great dane jumped the fence and got almost all of her birds.

Affected "chick" in this case is probably four months old (@jchny2000 and @LonelyPageTurne --you two might know his exact age better, but he's a rose-comb clean-faced progeny of jchny200)'s splash Maran). I've got him on Denagard (just in case) and electrolytes/vitamins. He does have some bruising around the hock joint, but it's pretty minor and obviously hurts to tinker with it (he nipped me this morning). Poor buddy. Going to have to name him Mr. April because of his cute little "rain drops".

Hmm, he is close to 6 months, am thinking. One of my last hatches, he is an OE roo.

Rural king in terre haute is doing a free chick week first 10 are free after rebate I'll get anyone some if you like just need address and gas money to deliver them
Great post!

Crazy busy~My sow is about to farrow any day! Setting her up in our livestock trailer so she is warm, dry and by herself. Her milk dropped this morning, she is due the 27th!
Set my first tray of eggs from my breeding pens. Dark Cornish, Sumatra and Orpingtons. Converting 2 big heavy workbenches into breeding pens. That will pretty much take care of the last few groups I wanted to confine. Waiting for ducks to start laying, and the guineas.

So I currently have 3 chicken coops for sale. None of them will be very easy to move but they are available. If you are interested prices range from $200 to $3,000. Although I am willing to work with someone if they want to trade. I won't need poultry stuff but I do need a replacement garbage disposal or my driveway need sealing if that happens to be your thing.

No matter the age, whenever a bird is "down in the legs" a Thiamine/Riboflavin deficiency should be one of the first suspects. Vitamin E can also play a role.

It definitely won't hurt to go that route in any case.

Is it possible that he may have jumped from some height and injured himself? I did have a cockerel about that age that seemed to injur himself. There was no apparent evidence of injury that could be seen or felt, but he was one for going up on high places and jumping down. It was just as he was coming into that age that he wanted to mate everything that he saw (at least 3 x in quick succession) . Anyhow, after not being able to see anything external, I did offer him the raw liver...which was kind of a joke because he kept giving it away to the ladies! I even locked him by himself so he'd eat it and he'd feed them through the fence.

I did manage to get some down him...

Anyhow, I just kept an eye on him. He had bright eyes, was healthy in all respects except that he didn't want to put weight on the leg. By all observances he was not experiencing a deficiency as he exhibited no malaise whatsoever. Eventually he learned to hop on one leg...it was hilarious to watch him because he wanted to protect the flock and he got really fast on one leg - sometimes even faster than the others. Hopped like that for at least 6 weeks. I began to wonder if he'd ever use that leg normally but eventually he started putting more weight on the leg and then at some point was walking like normal.

The other thing that was funny - because he didn't have full strength in his leg, he couldn't keep the ladies "against their will". They learned really fast how to side-step him if they didn't appreciate his "advances". It was probably the best thing for teaching a young fella his manners real quick. But, heck, what torture for a "teenager" to be given the slip when all these "women" were around to drive him crazy! Honestly, I think I enjoyed that part a little more than I should have...but it was quite hilarious.

So sorry for your loss. She was a real beauty.
