Today is March 31st and the last day for all Indy-area people to obtain proof of prior ownership!

Oh, and as a stick-it-to-the-man aside, can anybody give me an official receipt for a goat, an emu, a goose and every other kind of banned bird we can think of? I don't necessarily need a bunch of free soon-to-be-banned animals, but I'd love some receipts for them. Think of it as peaceful protest!

Minor score earlier today. Helped my grandfather install a new water softener today. I took the old salt reservoir. Must be around 40 gallons. Haven't decided if it will be a water catchment for the garden or a catchment for the the new coop and a cup watering system.

How are you liking that Nigerian dwarf goat Pair I sold you? Hated to part with them, but needed money to offset my new coop. Enjoy them!

@tmarsh83 I didn't use a tractor for our meat birds, had a small coop and run for them. Here the cornish crosses are at 1 week old on April 5.



Here they are on April 30, much larger but not quite ready. Don't mind the silkie in lower right corner. She liked to visit them. LOL





Just a few weeks later, on May 17th you can see they are fully grown. We slaughtered on May 23, and really could have done it a week earlier as there was more fat on them, not much more muscle.

Once the chickens have their adult feathers and the threat of frost has passed, the chickens were outside without a lamp and fine.

I did my first group in building that's now the house for the goats. They did well in there too. They were 5 weeks at the end of august so were already jumping the fence. That was my first experience free ranging them, and it worked out great.

I do have gosling due to hatch in a couple weeks! Your little chinese babies may be in this hatch.

It's amazing that you can see changes in their appearance each day. "They grow so fast" lol.

Just a reminder IMO I recommend wiring together all the the parts of your heat lamp because the clamp lamp type can loosen and come apart.

@PeacefulWalls ~ So sorry to hear about your Dad's surgery and you being away from home while caring for him. Hope he's on the mend, and all of you can get back to your normal routine.

When my older daughter turned 27 last year and had to get her own health insurance, she found a good program through Indiana's CareSource Just4Me.

Thank you for the heads up on the lamp. We have it chained and wired but never thought about wiring it to itself. The thing makes me nervous :/ I was looking at premier heat plates because we weren't supposed to have chicks until May. But, since I couldn't wait for chicks, we did the heat lamp. I still may order the plate or make a cave.

Last night, the hubs came over and asked if I was ok....I said, yeah, why? He says you've been standing over that box for like 45 minutes! I love seeing all their little personalities emerge.
