INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Everyone!!!! ...BE SURE YOU HAVE MULTIPLE WATER STATIONS BOTH INSIDE AND OUT.

It is not uncommon for younger birds or birds lower on pecking order to be intimidated away from food and water. Please, everyone put out some extra water sources spaced far enough apart that everyone can get to them.

PLEASE do this!! Learn from my mistake! It was something I didn't think about because the boys had gotten along fine until within the past few days, but that was all it took to take down poor little Donnie in that heat. I could kick myself for it. :(

Had my second loss to the heat already. My two young cockerels started fighting a couple days ago, and Umru, who is already HUGE because he's a Brahma, beat the tar out of Donnie and had him afraid to go in to get a drink. By the time I figured out that Don was having problems with heat and dehydration, it was too late. He passed in my arms a few hours ago. I'm so crushed. My little man.

Take the heat seriously, y'all. It kills so quick.

I'm so sorry, pipd. I'm kind of amazed it wasn't the Brahma having problems; they're such fluffy, feather-intensive, well insulated birds. It think their generally lazy, easy-going nature is about the only thing that saves them from heat stroke here.

I'm freezing more than twenty little Gatorade bottles of water in my chest freezer. Going to try to get the kids to a pool and leave the birds with a lot of ice tomorrow. There's already a fan trained on the nest boxes, but I might bring a 16" or 20" out for them, too.

Just some random photos of our younger growing birds - hopefully we'll be able to find good homes for them so they don't end up being "invited to dinner"

his comb is too bumpy for SOP, but he's a nice, gentle, & smart boy - we still may keep him as a back-up roo since he's so nice of a temperament

am so sorry. This heat has been just awful! My black AM rooster was ok today, so I caught him in time.
If you find a bird in distress, Everyone, get them in the shade, and get that body temp down FAST. It doesn't always help gut the quickest way is cool water, soak them down and get them hydrated too. Electrolytes are very important. If you have to, take them in the house and put them in the tub or shower.

Agreed, I have 3 wading pools for my 3 goose groups. (and the big pond) Waterfowl especially need plenty of fresh water to keep cool. Darker colored animals in general are even more at risk. They have a large area muddy from water changes, but its giving them plenty of places to cool down. The free range chicken group for the day will stand in the pools too.
