I like your outdoor brooder & use a similar one for my chicks - on nice days. All I did was tie down a board across the top for shade & hawk protection. What's great is that there's no cleaning. Just move it a few feet each day. At night I just carry them to the garage to a storage tub that has a heat source if needed. Because it's just for sleeping or rainy days, the shavings last a very long time. The brooder stage is a very short one. By the time they're 4-6 weeks, they start their transition to the coop. At that time, they sleep in a fenced off part of the coop/run & they eventually get the option to free range with the flock or use their playpen. I leave a corner open & have the chick waterer & feeder in the play pen just for them. When I 1st leave it open, they spend most of their time inside it. After a week, they get more adventurous but will slip back inside if they feel threatened.
There's no need to buy extra stuff for chicks. IMO- the home made stuff often works better.

Need to drill holes in the cap for the nipples to work properly. Scrap wire, string, clips, etc. used to hang at the correct height.

If you cut & fold the corners of a milk carton, you'll get a similar feeder.

Sorry for all the grammar and spelling errors in my earlier posts, for being a "smart" phone it's not very intuitive for talk to text haha.

So o just got off the phone with my aunt and we were going over ideas on how to improve the brooder. One of her ideas was to create a false floor with utility wire which made me think why not just use my breeding hutch for my rabbits? It's all utility wire I can still set up the heat lamp on one side, I can get their water and food in and out, and I can use trays underneath to catch the droppings. I think I've solved my problem!
Well, one of them , because if I still have to brood the chicks and ducks separately, then I still need. Feeder, waterer and lamp

I will move this up to the porch so it's still protected, but I think this will work perfectly!

Oh my goodness, how adorable! Fluffiness overload!

@Indyshent

And I was JUST trying to talk the wife into some of these! :-(

I would just keep it on the down low -lol- because word travels, and you probably don't know all of your neighbors. All it takes is one person to call animal control for a surprise visit. Then you'd likely be on a follow-up visit list. Having a private area of your flock is good, and you can tell curious people that you can't allow visitors because of biosecurity.

You cannot keep guineas on the down low. It is not possible. They summon police and complaints at least as much as a foul smell emanating from your yard. It's not the sight of them that will cast a spell over your neighborhood (because they're hilarious, adorable, relatively small and might even get mistaken for Clown x Chicken hybrids).

No, friend, these little beauties cast Induce Migraine, Summon Busybody IV, Summon Peace Officer II, and the Nuisance Ordinance Violation curse at a 20th caster level-- with only vocal components. They have a +20 racial bonus to Spot and Listen, but a -20 penalty to Sense Motive and versus any kind of fear effect. They are easily confounded by any sort of fence and will dial it up to 11 if they can't get to each other. Why look for your compatriots when you can attempt to summon them with heinous screeching? "Attempt" is a key word, because most of the time, the other guineas will just mill around and ignore the calling party... leading to more screeching. And noise violations. And unwanted visits. And migraines. Lots and lots of migraines.

(Why, yes, we have been instructing our teenaged daughter in the ways of Dungeons and Dragons 3.5e as of this summer!)
Government. Ruins. Everything.

It's a universal fact.

Busy body local bureaucrats are the worst.

I couldn't live in an incorporated area. I'd go to jail.

If I could afford it, I'd be in the sticks, too. this way, I get to impersonate Dennis Leary's famous and NSFW song.
This is about how I feel at this pint in time.

I got my muscovys from @racinchickins and I am in love with them, but I don't want to over beat him with questions. I've been using bedding hay (orchard grass) foor their brooder box..... Is their another materiel that we could use that would be A) cost effective, and B) work better. Since they all huddle, they all "go" in the same area. I was thinking sand or kitty litter, but don't want to jump the gun. Especially since we have a Buff Braham and a Lavender Orpington chick coming in Saturday as well!!!
Congrats on your future bitties! Orps and Brahmas are some of the best tempered birds I've ever raised. They're almost universally darlings. If they turn out to not be darlings, they're big enough to eat, which is a plus.

Looks like you figured what I was going to advise before I even saw your question. You're a psychic.

Those were awesome! I must do these... sometime... when I have some money to buy some nipples for my chickens (wouldn't that sound soooooo weeird in a different context?).

I'm too sick and tired to be on here. My sense of humor is showing, bare as a bra strap with the wrong kind of neckline.

Still have the goat wethers looking for a new home. Hoping to find a pet home for these guys.

Vet was out Thursday and gave them a clean bill of health. No need to worm. She thought someone might want to train them for cart pulling for 4h. (Not sure if they can do 4h with horns, however. Probably varies from location to location.)

They are 5 yo Spanish/Boer cross. I got them for brush clearing. Have been on browse and hay with a free-feed mineral; and they were fed the same way where they came from.

Strong healthy guys and great pets. Very friendly, follow you around like a dog!
