Quote: We've had some trouble the past few years getting them to survive the winter. We fed a lot this fall and also really protected the hive well this year. Hopefully that will pay off in a live hive this spring.

As far as a nuc goes, I'm pretty sure that the Indiana Beekeepers association is working on a program to have locally raised bees available. I'll have to ask the DH as he's the one who takes care of our bees and goes to the meetings.

Glad to see he's doing better!

I was hoping to see this begin to resolve itself but my black sex link hen's rear end seems to continue to grow more naked little by little. I'm still a newbie at this chicken thing but I looked at her about a week ago and don't see anything that makes me think its mites or lice, etc. Thinking she's getting feather picked when she gets on the roost but have no idea which of the other 5 girls is doing it. It dawned on me today that in the waning light inside the coop as they go to roost, that light pink chicken booty is a huge contrast to her black feathers. Should I paint her backside a darker shade with some bluekote? Starting to worry about her a little bit as she's gotten noticeably smaller than her BSL sister over the course of the past month or so. I've been trying to increase their free range time to ease any confinement stress in case that was part of it. Added some BOSS to their evening snack a few weeks ago so she'd have some extra energy for warmth. She's still laying though, which I assume is a good sign.

As I said before, I'm far from an expert, so if you all think it's probable that I'm missing some buggy parasites, I'm not opposed to being proactive with a treatment.

Also if you have tips on figuring out which one might be the feather picker (assuming that's the problem) I'd love to hear those as well.

Additional info: had the same issue with my other BSL back in October/November and the problem went away on its own. Could it be a molt thing or did the unwanted attention just get shifted to a new target?
