INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ISO Does anyone breed brahmas in southern indiana at least 1 hour away from north vernon indiana. We mainly want light and dark brahmas. we have lights and love them. But the dark brahmas we really want. We will also do for buff if that is all that is available. But would love a mix of all three!!!

I was planning on it, I have several colors of Brahma hens. But my lone roo was snatched by something over the winter. I'm going to have to either find another good roo somewhere or order some more hatching eggs.

This past Sunday was the 5 year anniversary of the day we got our first chicks. Seems like 3 years to me, but DH said it seems like 10 to him. lol He acts tough, but loves them dearly. In celebration, here are some pics I took of my current flock on Sunday. It was breezy, so some tail feathers were messed up.


Here's my flock of 8 all together. The Frizzles are my adorable little toys from @ellymayRans and the three Orps are my beauties from @kittydoc . Roadrunner and Lacey were traded for two RIR cockerels in the original purchase that were supposed to be pullets. Smalty came from former member, Brad Selig, who had to quit chickens because of job constraints.

DH cut down ornamental grasses, which made giant bird nests for the girls' entertainment.

Smalty still pecks the orps' feet if they crowd her on a perch in the coop. She has seniority over size!

Last night, I was midway through a post and the power went out. Ugh. Just lots of fiece winds. Earlier in the day, the page editor wouldn't work.

Hatchery experiences: I have been reading posts that I missed when I was in Louisville, and noticed good and bad comments about hatcheries. Keep ‘em coming! I have been compiling comments since last year and hope to put them on our Indiana page soon.

@ellymayRans ~ Yesterday, we had pouring rain most of the day and I went out to check on The Frizzles, and I found them to be very resourceful!
Btw, it looks like my LF girls chewed the tops off of the daylily leaves.

If you do any hatching, I'd like a dark brahma pullet sometime and will pay extra since that's a tall order!

Automatic coop door opener info needed please
We're going to be gone for a week in April, and DS will feed the chickens, but is gone long hours because of work and working on his MBA. We decided to get an auto door opener to lessen the hassle for DS. I remember many of you commenting on the models you've purchased. We will have to make modifications because our coop has a walk-in door, and I believe you have to have a small square type of auto door. Seems like they unfortunately cost in the $200 range. I would appreciate recommendations~ Thank you!

Not that I don't think an automatic coop door is a bad idea, but if $ is tight, you may be able to find a cheaper way.

We have plenty of neighbors who want to buy our eggs, & children who adore our flock. We regularly find chicken sitters who literally work for eggs. Especially if your son will be there to feed them & clean the coop, you may be able to simply ask a neighbor's kid to open/close the door.

PS: I use digital timers with mine rather than the manual ones. Like them much better because they're easier to program and have a backup battery so if the electric goes out the clock continues to run and you don't have to re-set it.

OH...and if you do get ANY auto opener, be sure to put the door up from the floor about 12 or so inches so you still have room for the litter on the floor. I guess that's the same with any door whether auto or not, but just thought I'd say that before you cut a hole!

In the video I don't think he shows that but it is very important. It also keeps the litter from getting in the doorway and keeping the door from closing all the way since it hits litter.

What breed might this chick be? And what gender do you think it is? I was sent these 6 Olive green colored eggs in the mail from someone, and only 1 hatched.
