Anyone see news about Avian flu again? I just heard.

In TN: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/06/dining/bird-flu-avian-influenza-chickens-tyson-foods.html?_r=0

In WI: http://wsau.com/news/articles/2017/mar/08/bird-flu-returns-to-farm-in-wisconsin/

Both of these are too close for comfort.

Surge in it in humans too: https://www.statnews.com/2017/02/28/bird-flu-surge/

Thanks for the heads-up!  I haven't been to the Mill since December so I miss these things.

I had one little Black Australorp that got in a batch of chicks by mistake and she was a mean little girl.  I think @jchny2000
had some mean BAs too.  Wondering if that is a breed tendency with them or just certain lines?  Anyone had BA experience?

@JaneyMarie

Have you had BAs before?  Do you know who the breeder is?

My two BA are MMcM hatchedys stock, but I've found them to be on the saltier side as well. Not a breed I'll have again.

My first Mille Fleur Cochin chick of the season hatched just a bit ago. It pipped towards the wrong end but made it out easy peasy!!

I have 15 more to hatch in the next few weeks. Already gathering the next 6 to go in after this first batch hatches hopefully within a few days!

@tmarsh83 and @Leahs Mom my BA is sweet but crazy loud. I call her the spokeswoman of the group. As we've added birds to the flock she just gets louder. She honestly puts the roosters to shame! But she listens to me- if I call out "Fluffy Butt, knock it off" she stops her monologue. I guess she just wants to know she's been heard!

Quote: Most of the hens were bullies, extremely broody and oh my, the roosters! All 4 of the roosters I had were terribly mean. Mine were all hatchery birds.The last one was named Bruce. He was an excellent guardian for his hens. Meanest rooster I have ever owned. He wound up as soup

Or I have just readjusted keeping up. Daylight saving time starts tomorrow, don't forget to turn clocks ahead 1 hour.
DH asked me if I was going to hatch this year..ugh. I told him likely not but I sure miss having the little feet running around. My Porters poult order should come sometime in May, so will consider it after we brood them. Hoping its earlier, my turkeys have been laying a few weeks already. I may go ahead and set my OEG eggs, really like my trio. All 3 of them are just so social and sweet. The little rooster is a real lap guy. Both hens will fly right up and sit on your shoulder.
