A weekend of ups & downs. Sold lots of chicks & even my fav Spitzhauben Pair. (Yes, my sweet Drumsticks went to live with a very nice couple. We kept one female, but will still need to get the number down by fall.)It always feels good when you get a chance to meet other chicken families and know that your "babies" are going off to loving homes.

The sad & shocking news is that the chicken number went down by one today. My beloved Bielefelder "Hen Solo" died. The best I can figure is that she got into my garden by jumping the shortest section of fence by the gate. Perhaps she followed my intelligent lightweight athletic hen. Hen Solo probably couldn't find her way out. I do not want chickens in my garden, so I do not have feeders & waterers in there. Bieles don't do well in the heat. Being stuck in direct sunlight on a hot day with no water probably gave her a heart attack. I feel terrible. The fence is suppose to keep the chickens OUT not IN. I found her around 1pm. I already miss her continuous honking for treats as I do my chicken chores.

If she were mine, think I would just treat the one hen and keep my eyes on the others for any signs. Did you say this is a new girl? If so, it was likely the surroundings she was kept in were very different than yours and she just needs a little cleaning up

If you can get your hands on some VetRx to put right on her legs, then the vaseline or other oil on that, I think that will work pretty well. The bad thing about the vaseline is that dirt sticks to it

Yes, she's new. She was living as an only chicken for the last 6 months, completely free range all the time. They gave their others away back then, but couldn't catch her lol. Vet rx is sold at TS?

I am obsessed with cleanliness (scoop poo every day, sometime multiple times), but my husband refuses to get rid of his wild bird feeders so we are definitely at risk.

Here is the package insert information for using vetrrx (Poultry Formula) for scale mites:

"FOR LEGS AND FEET:
Use VetRx at room temperature directly from the bottle. Using a cotton swab, apply to scaly areas. Rub in well with swab or fingers. Do this every day, once daily, for one week. After the fifth or sixth day, scales should come off by themselves or with gentle hand rubbing. There after, apply to bird’s feet and legs three times monthly. Avoid soaking the feathers (Moderation use of VetRx will not harm feathers)."

At this link, down at the bottom, is a little chart for treating various external parasites. This is from the book written by the owner of BYC. I do see that he notes Ivermec for scale so I am surprised about that VetRx has the camphor in it. I think you could treat totally without the ivermec (never seen it recommended for scale mite before), however, and save the digestive system/immune system the extra strain.

In the link below, This guy has a nice rundown... some folks soak their legs in warm, soapy water and brush gently with a nail brush before the first treatment. This fellow uses olive oil.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Faraday. She was a funny, lovely girl, and you gave her a wonderful life.

On a lighter note, David Bowie is going to miss Drumsticks whenever he grows his butt feathers in proper and goes on tour in Europe. Optimus Prime is too busy being an oddly stealthy superhero to play in David's chicken run band, what with his daring over-the-fence searches for prime lady treats and all. Maybe Optimus will be convinced to take up drumming later. You know, Drumsticks was wasted as a drummer anyway--far too glamorous, and with that fine build too!--No, he really should have taken up the six strings. Girlies love guitarists.
