INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Whats your plans this year? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Long time, no hear--glad to see you on again!

The majority of our hens are 4.5=>5 yrs old and we suffered three hen losses last year for various reasons. With a small city flock, that means relatively few eggs per week.

Our chicken plan this year is to rebuild the flock. We've ordered Naked Neck, Norwegian Jaerhon, Barred Holland, Dominique, and Rhode Island White chicks for delivery at the end of February. I've already built the brooder box for that.

This year, we need to construct the greenhouse kit we purchased last fall, and we also want to build an earth (aka cob) oven.

And of course, it's almost February, so I've planted pansy seeds and soon will plant rosemary, lavender and eggplant seeds. Those are the seeds that take the longest to get to garden size, so they're the earliest seeds we plant.

I forgot to mention in my last post, I'm also on the hunt for a new Choc or choc cuckoo orpington rooster. I have one with my hens now but I'm not as happy with his body type/stature, etc.

If anyone has or knows of a pure bred choc/cuckoo orp rooster that needs a new home please let me know.

Is that an HDX storage container from Home Depot? Fun facts if it is, I just bought one too even though that's one of the many products I move around for work. Its also made in America!

I have had the privilege knowing a few of you well over 5 years now! Hard to believe, it seems like it was only a year ago searching the internet looking for answers, finding BYC! My first time owning laying hens, was terrified watching my 12 week old babies rolling and flopping on the ground! I was convinced they were poisoned! So I ran in the house, googled what I saw, and found BYC. Had no idea what dust bathing was, lol! I had only raised meat birds previously. Since then, I have always found answers right here. Even more so, some very close friends.
Bottom line, there is never a dumb question. Learning together and sharing experiences with other chicken people will help you keep your flock happy and healthy. During the spring/summer our thread gets a bit busy! So if your question isn't answered please post again.

Thanks for being super heplful! I have a few months of course, so I can keep my eyes open see if anything else comes along. If not, I will be sure to look at menards especially when they throw out their 11% rebate deal.

For me it was total panic on a beautiful, sunny spring day.
OMG! My chickens are MELTING!

Technically my 1st fear was looking into the brooder and seeing all my little chicks looking dead (because they were soundly sleeping in a way that only chicks can.) .....But, I think a backyard filled with melting chickens was more amusing.

In both cases I was relieved to find out that everything was OK. Even when things were not OK and we had a sick hen or a loss due to a predator, the folks on BYC were here to help.

OH MY YES Agree on both, so many learning experiences! Cornish Cross just don't act "normally" like a heritage chicken does. I raised tons of them, literally in the early 80s. Dads only experience was White Leghorn and at the time talked me out of egg layers. He now loves my green, olive and blue eggs most!

Hello! I'm looking for some adult crested cream legbar hens! Any one know where I can get them? I have 2 cream legbar roosters and i want to breed them. Please let me know if you have some or know where i can get them. I live in Indianapolis.

My Cotton Patch gander seems to favor the EE hens, while my Chinese goose comes up to me and makes her wings flat. There's some confusion here...

I plan to get a Cotton Patch goose gosling this year, and hope my gander figures out at some time that he's a goose.

Yep! It's one of the few containers that was 18" tall (the height I prefer to use for brooding chicks if I'm going to use a heat bulb).
