Is it a sure thing that if I see an indigo snake around my chicken pen that it's there to steal eggs? I wonder how many it could eat. I'm not real fond of snakes but I know they are a natural enemy of rattlers and I've never seen a rattler in the 30 years I've lived here.

Legally you cant touch them, they are endangered and protected. Chances are its a black rat though, much more common. Just make sure the coop is very well secured and the snakes will keep on doing a great job controlling rodents and venomous species.

All chicks should be protected until they are adults, a good hardware cloth should keep snakes out.

I'd love to have an indigo snake around. They are supposed to be extremely docile and beautiful. Gotta watch for snakes when there are chicks and eggs involved though.
