Indoor aviary anyone?

Wow, talent abounds on this forum! Great coops and ideas. I did some drawings the other night. The most important design considerations seem to be ease of cleaning & feeding. Keeping the droppings inside is also a biggie as the coturnix I've kept have the tendency to backup to the edge of the cage, the poop outside. Oh yeah, keeping 'Slyvester' out of 'Tweedie's cage' is also right there on top of the list too!

I really like the idea of the converted hutch / TV stand. Might have to swing by the second hand store to see what they have...still too cold in these parts for gargage sales.

On that converted hutch.....you can put full spectrum lighting at the peak, and for droppings, I custom made 3 pans out of cardboard boxes and taped the heck out of 'em (with packing tape) for water resistance. My dremmel came in handy, to drill holes in the plexiglass (which Lowe's cut down to size for free). And, you can make it a double decker by putting screen/hardware cloth on the "rails" that the original shelves set on. Anyway, was really cheap and a nice focal point, 'specially when it was decked out in greenery and mini christmas lights.

Flop shop, nice job for big birds. Thats alot like what I've been planning. As for an outside fight Im thinking about chain link or GAW wire. Then screening in the enclousure, kind of like a 3 season porch. Question, how does the heat from your room enter your cage?

there are vents in the top and bottom of the glass wall structure. the room has ceiling radiant heat. he's now shareing the room (not the aviary) with a mealy parrot. they both love when i'm in there hammering away at a project.

Love the pic's and links.. all are helping in our building project..

We are going to be building 2 indoor aviary's in our one part of the garage/1st floor starting in Oct. we have 2 rooms both have windows, but we will be adding full spectrum lighting in there as well.

Plan to try mearns quail in them. Each room/aviary is about 10x12. Should be pretty neat, may add a few doves or some other small free flying bird in there as well.

Our bird room is a converted sunroom with conventional cages for the budgies and the linnies, and an aviary I built for the doves in an alcove at one end of the room. We let the doves "free range" all day, and let the linnies out to fly around periodically (but not when the male dove is out because he gets territorial with them).

I put up matchstick blinds on all of the windows (and keep them rolled down) because I didn't want anyone flying into the room's picture windows and getting injured. They don't block too much light and you can still see through them to the outside.

For the doves' aviary, I used clear packing tape to stripe the window for a similar reason. This is working great, too, and was certainly cheaper than the blinds.

Coturnix should be just fine outside, as long as they have a shelter of some sort to go into. Of course, you won't get any eggs if they are outside, but they will survive.

Coturnix droppings have a very strong odor, I would stick with keeping them in the basement, but that's just me
