Indoor chickens?

What is the advantage of keeping chickens inside? In cages? It just seems to me that allowing them to be outdoors in an area that they can spread their wings, scratch around, and do what is natural is so much better and cleaner. Is it because of cold?

That sounds like a serious health risk. If she has children or dependents I would seriously have to consider reporting it. I cant even IMAGINE how on earth anyone could live in the same enclosed space as 10 full grown pooping chickens.

I thought that was just my girls' way of honoring me...

yikes! can you imagine the chicken dust? Much less the poop. I bet she does not know what she has gotten herself into. I had chicks just 6 in the house with constant clean ups at the age of 4 weeks and I thought I would go crazy with the stickey dust. I started sneezing and we had to put them out pronto. The house, curtains, walls and carpet had to be throughly cleaned. Not again for me. Its amazing how fast they get big and stinky or dusty. Now I have a grow out coop and brooder. They will only be inside till about 2 weeks then out they go. Gloria Jean

Two words: CLUE-LESS!!!!!

I knew someone with ONE chicken indoors, and their house was always pretty nasty. I can't imagine TEN.

I repeat: CLUE-LESS!!!!!

I keep my seramas in the house over winter

They are however in a special indoor coop and kept extremely clean. I duct tape off the vent to that room so the dust doesn't get into the air ducts. They get plenty of natural sunlight from the window right by their indoor coop. Believe it or not they actually love it and prefer to be inside rather then out in the garage where the rest of the chickens live. I couldn't imagine keeping big standard size chickens in the house, I would NEVER go for that!

I have three hens I bring in at night, but they stay outside during the day. What are the logistics of ten hens in the house? Mine are in a extra large dog crate. Rarely, are they in the house during the day. Only when it is really bad weather. Then they are allowed to free range only in the front room with a lot of sheets underneath them.

I do agree that they are happier outside during the day. Mine prefer to be inside at night. (They also like to be cuddled and watch a little TV before bed.) Yet, we only have 3 in at night and not 10 day and night. But, I do understand the concern of letting them run around unsupervised.

Is she not allowed to have chickens were she lives? Sometimes. people keep them indoors to have them under the radar. Perhaps she can have them in an enclosed patio or basement.

Exactly my thought. Not to mention, our University extension guy says that is how Avian flu spread to humans. In Asian countries, people brought their chickens in at night. They were trying to prevent people from stealing their chickens. But, not a healthy thing to do.

Well, she lives alone. I'm sure that it'll stay that way if she doesn't change her mind about having 10 chickens in her house! LOL.

The exact reason avian flu mutated into a form that was contracted by humans is no really known. Those that did get it were workers in crowded chicken houses. Few contracted the disease. By your logic people should not keep parrots as pets.

If people keep rodents on their house, why not chickens. Rodents, especially rats, are closely related to us and are vectors for many diseases. That is why they use rats, mice and monkeys to study human diseases. Chickens are distantly related to us. The diseases they have rarely effect humans.

This does not mean I advocate keeping ten chickens in your house.
