in the future i want to get a house duck, but i was wondering what breed? i LOVE call ducks and pekins. which would be a better house pet?

A kitten would be the best indoor duck honestly

Ive done it a few times, it takes about 3 months before iam soo sick of washing blankets and towels that I cant stand it any longer

Ive tried big dog carries with shavings, you need to change the shavings about every second day and when they flap their wings or play around the shavings go everywhere.

Ive tried a blanketed area and they need to be washed daily. Nothing like a duck having a big stinkin squirt early in the morning for ya. If you use a diaper it needs to be kept clean or their back end gets poopy and its gross and unhealthy.

Now ive been preaching its fun for along time but the truth is the fun very barely outweighs the commitment involved... But on a different note lots of folks keep two ducks their backyard and keep indoors just for the night. And a lot of members here do have indoor ducks and have been for along time

the duck would be indoors at night and when we are inside (diapered when hanging out with us indoors, not diapered while sleeping) and outdoors with us most of the day (i hope to take him with me most places)

I took my young drake to my family's property for a visit, 6 hour drive and he sat on a blanket on the passenger seat the whole way it was soo cute and fun

You can make it work forsure, it is fun! Like I seid some people have seen issues where the diaper is on too long and their butts get sore, diaper rash essential. But its easy to avoid

Ducks can live upwards to ten years, are you sure you want to take that commitment? Cleaning up their feathers, waste, or changing diapers, keeping them in a secure area so they can't damage anything in your house, making sure someone is with them 24/7, all things that need to be considered.

Sometimes I think us humans try too hard to make things work, IMO waterfowl are the happiest and easiest to care for when outside in the environment they were intended to be in.

Calls are going to fly around the house, Pekins produce a large amount of crap a day. The calls wings could be clipped, but they will still be able to get onto let's say a table.

i honestly wouldn’t mind them jumping up onto furniture or a table lol, my indoor pets are allowed on furniture

Hello! :)

So very first thing, I do not walk around recommending an indoor pet duck, ever. It takes a level of care and time out my daily life that I could never entrust in other people to honestly keep up with; year in and year out for up to or beyond a decade. It gets HARD when it's cold out and you can't use your hose or spend time outside. It's really not the easiest when it is warm out either.

Aside from that, I will gladly give you any and all info I have gathered! Here's some basics so you have a start. Always discuss with your whole household because this affects everyone. Ducks do quack. I have made it so I can shush her up if need be, but you can't expect them to never talk... Is your household okay with an occasional screaming duck? Are they still okay with it if it happens a little more often than occasionally?

You'll also need to consider things like what you will use as bedding and how you want to offer water. Doesn't sound that complicated; but trust me.... Water will be ALL OVER your house if you are not very specific and careful about that set up. I hope you are creative with lots of patience, lol!!! (PRO TIP!) Car battery covers (flipped upside down with a slot cut out to make it easy to reach head into) and water heater drip pans (as is) make great trays for underneath a ducky waterer. Shavings will not work indoors as @Jpat said, the second they flap it'll be everywhere. Puppy pads will work when they're ducklings but as soon as they are large enough, they'll try to eat them. Towels can work but they're small and if they're big enough than they're too thin. Blankets are SO HARD TO CLEAN! (Due to thickness) Assuming you're not going to put towels and blankets with duck poo through your washer... you'll have to follow my method. Pen has to be refreshed literally EVERY day. I use drop clothes rather than blankets or towels now, they're easier to clean. I hose off the drop cloth completely every day and hang them outside to dry. Once fully dried I run a batch of them through the washer with some bleach. You have to be prepared to take this time out of your day, daily. This is a huge commitment and not something to rush.

On a side note, I promise you that I will never feel this connection again. You know how people talk about their 'once in a lifetime dog'? Well this is my once in a lifetime duck. There will never be another Gil. She's stolen my heart and showed me a new life through the same eyes. I'm really just adventuring and living in Gil's World. <3

Check out our adventure from last Sunday. Always feel free to pm me!
