Take the Plymouth Rock, for example. Hatcheries have modified strains to create an "industry" version that lays extremely well, doesn't go broody often, and a few other things.

Heritage Plymouth Rocks don't lay as many eggs, but have good mothering instincts, quality plumage, more meat on them, and are suited to life in a farm.

In the reviews section nearly everybody, including myself, reviews the Plymouth Rock as "industry" birds. But every once in a while you get a person reviewing a heritage strain. The two types of strains are so different that they might as well be different birds!

It is hard for people like me to find info on heritage breeds when all that comes up is industry strains.

Would there be a way to split breeds into separate heritage and industry reviews or is this a hopeless fantasy?

I categorize the hatchery Barred Plymouth Rocks as Hatchery Quality/stock.

I categorize Heritage Plymouth Barred Rocks, as Heritage since they conform to the standard, & are used in Shows.

Seconded, my family used to raise and show the Heritage type Barred Plymouth rocks, they aren't even close to what everyone calls barred rock.
The genes have been so diluted and mixed ( my hatchery rocks dont even have yellow legs) that I'm not sure that the average Barred Rocks can even be called a heritage breed.

Hatchery stock isn't great compared to Heritage Rocks. I don't have regular hatchery stock anymore.

I agree, hatchery rocks and RIRs and many other breeds aren't really heritage or duel-purpose, just layers. That's not bad though, they can still be great pets!

Your rocks are so pretty! :love Do you happen to know where they were sourced from?

I got my Heritage Plymouth Barred Rocks From Meyer's Hatchery. They have really good Quality birds.

Commercial Layers are like Leghorns, & Red Sex-links. When I first started with Hatchery Quality Barred Rocks, they still went broody.
True, I mostly call sex-links that, but occasionally I feel like it fits my other hatchery birds (like when they lay me an egg a day for two weeks). But around others I typically say industry.
