Inexpensive Homemade Waterer** Updated with pictures***

I would worry about a small one falling in and drowning. Can you cut the tub down smaller so if one did fall in it could stand up.

I must be just a bit slow....where are they suppose to drink from, the tote or the bucket? Are you putting the lid on the bucket? I would love to do this for my chickens. It will be 110 this weekend, so they are really hot. Their water heats up so fast that they just flop in the yard panting. I have even thought of getting a baby pool for them to wade in, but the poop is just way to gross for me.

Thanks for posting your idea!

He said the tote is only about a foot deep, so about as tall as an average bucket. My girls currently drink from a regular bucket from the car dept at Walmart. They have no trouble reaching the water. I think the pic he has probably makes it look taller than it is.

Edited to say I'm an idiot! Maybe he only uses it for his adult birds so drowning isn't an issue?

The problem i see it that the chickens will roost on the bucket and poop in the water. I would put something on top to keep them off of it. Good Idea.

Sorry, I should have simply explained that where it sits in the coop it is low and they just come up and drink out of the top of the tote. It's not one for small chickens but for ones that are older. My youngest ones are only about 13 weeks or so and they do just fine.

I would not use this one for small ones. Wait until they are good size. My youngest are about 13 weeks or so and they do just fine. I put the bucket lid on after filling with water.

I guess I could have explained better when I originally posted it but I didn't think about the questions it might raise. This would not be a waterer for chicks. My youngest are about 13 weeks or so and they do just fine drinking out of the top. The bucket can also slide so that there is more space on one end or you can even it out so same space on both ends. I put the bucket lid on after filling it with water and the ice. They may very well get up on the lid and take a dump. Maybe there is something you could sit on it to discourage them or prevent them from sitting on it. Hopefully it will work great throughout the hot months.

No worries, I could have explained better. They drink from the tote and I do put the lid on the bucket. It's not one to use with small chickens, but my 13 week old or so do just fine. Put an ice block in the bucket and you will have cooler chickens.

For Sam the Yam:

I GLAD this works well for you in the way your "chicken ranch" is set up! Undoubtedly, it will also work well for many others.

It wouldn't work in my "chicken ranch".
