Good morning!

So Tuesday morning I noticed my one of my hens had a limp, so waited until right before she went to bed to check on it. I don't live where my chicks are so I don't catch everything. She had bad bumblefoot. It was really swollen so I socked her in Epson salt for about 20 mins took her out and started to take the scab off, it was open, but nothing came out while we squeezed besides the hard "plug" Put colloidal silver and antibiotic treatment. Went to change it before she woke up today and it's super hot. swelling went down a little bit but her toes still are and really hot. Tonight, I'm going to soak her again with Epson salt and oregano oil. Is there anything I can put on it besides what I already have? I have VetRX on hand, peroxide, A&D, and Bacitracin. Is there something I can get that could be more affective taking the infection out? Is there something I can give her orally?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Bumble foot takes a while to heal. Keep soaking and packing with the silver and antibiotic ointment and wrapping daily. Don't wrap too tightly.

You might be able to find and pick out more of the hard pus with tweezers or gently squeeze out more.

You could try an oral antibiotic if you think the infection is spreading onto her system. I've never had that work for treating a localized infection in the foot.

I had one that wasn't treated properly by a vet. The infection got into her bone.

Thank you! Is it normal for the foot and leg to get hot? That's my biggest concern.

Is going to a vet expensive for chickens? I live in an area that doesn't have a lot of farm life.

Not in my experience. I'd see how it responds to your treatment initially since you just started to see if it gets better or worse.

I have taken several to avian vets. I think all vet care is expensive. Some were more reasonable than others. I would ask a lot of questions about treatment before you make the vet appointment.
Most avian vets also treat parrots and other pet birds so you may be able to find one.

I took one of my first hens to an avian vet for bumble foot. He was supposed to remove the bumble. But instead cleaned and wrapped it and gave me an oral antibiotic because they were closing early for an office party. I didn't question it because he's the vet, even though I knew deep down the infection should have been removed.

The infection spread and she had to have a toe amputated.
I have found it to be hit or miss as to how good avian vets are.
