I have a Frizzle that has been sick for almost 3 months. I have her separated from the flock and she was treated with smz-tmp, then a second treatment of smz-tmp and doxycycline, then she developed the eye infection. I have been treating that with terramycin with no success. I tried removing the puss, and I got some, but she fights me so much and I know it hurts her, so I can not get it all out. Does anyone have any recommendations? I feel terrible for her. She eats and drinks pretty well, but continues to lose weight.

It would be hard for us to know which it is, coryza or MG without testing. Does it smell bad? It could also be something got stuck in her eye and created an abscess. Is she sneezing or coughing? Could you take her to a vet to get the eye cleaned out? You also could get everything together to get the pus out of the eye, and have a helper wrap her like a burrito in a towel. Tweezers, QTips, saline flush, and applying either Terramycin or plain Neosporin ointment into the eye twice a day would be good. Is there any gunk inside the roof of her beak?

It smells bad, even before the eye infection started, which leads me to believe it is coryza. Started as URI. Nothing on the roof of her mouth.

Do you have gentimicin on hand? It may work better than the terramycin for her eye.

If the whole thing started as a URI, treating her with Tylan might a better option to help combat the swelling since it looks like it extends to just below the sinus cavity. Is she still in good spirits despite the infection?

My vet just called in Erythromycin eye drops and she gave me a protocol of antibiotics. I'm bring her in the house because oral antibiotics with be given every 8 and 12 hours. I will eventually bite the bullet and order tylosin to keep on hand. I didn't do it to start with because it is expensive and you have to buy a large container (i was ordering direct from medical supply). I work at a vet clinic.

The SMZ TMP (bactrim) and doxy are a good combo for the coryza infection. Erythromycin as well as Terramycin which is hard to get now without a prescription should help. Many use plain Neosporin when no vet is necessary. Be sure to apply the eye ointment 2-4 times daily, but getting the thick exudate out and look for any seed or foreign body will help meds to work. I would close your flock, since all birds should be considered carriers.
