INFESTATION

I wouldn't eat the majority of the things my chickens eat. For starters, I wouldn't eat the feed I am feeding them. I don't think that just because I won't eat it, my chickens shouldn't is a good argument.

Hhmm, I find this interesting and I'll tell you why.

I put my feed into a Rubbermaid container as it takes up less room (slides under the nesting bench) and is easier to handle than feed bags everywhere and breathes better than a garbage pail...mpv.

Because of this choice, I realized that insects would likely invade the container for a good meal...so I layered in Food Grade DE gave everything a good stir and put the container in its usual spot. Well the other day, I was topping up the feeder and noticed some dead bugs in the feed. No larvae, no eggs, and every bug was dead and desicated. Please note that the time span from the day I put the feed into the contain to the day I refilled the feeder was about a week.

The point of my story is that while I would take feed back that had a pre-existing infestation and get my money back....Use FGDE in your storage containers to control an invading insect population. My chickens have shown no negative effects from either eating an occasional dead bug or having minimal amounts of FGDE mixed into the feed.

I wouldn't, but then again I don't eat bugs. Chickies do, and they LOVE them. I would just see it as extra protein.

The only problem with this situation is if the bug infestation is heavy, and they've eaten the germ out of the grains. ~The germ is located in the center of each grain, and is the most nutritious part. ~ Otherwise, it's just a little more variety for the birds.
