I have a Khaki Campbell hen that was sitting on eggs. The other two hens I have kept adding to the nest so the pile was getting really high. I was advised that I should scoot her off the nest, candle them, mark the ones that I was going to leave in the nest and remove the newer eggs. So, I did that and within 24 hours she got off the nest. About 1.5 weeks later, she started sitting on a new nest that the 3 ladies were contributing to and I have no idea how many eggs are on that nest. She has been on them since the 2nd of May. I really wanted to leave her alone this time because we would really like her to hatch some ducklings. Problem is...I cannot seem to find ANY duck eggs in the pasture area or coop which leads me to believe that they are still depositing them in my broody's nest.
Today I found two of the hens sitting on the nest for about an hour or so and then the second got up and I haven't seen her back yet. Is it better to just leave her alone and whatever eggs are ready will hatch and then eventually take the rest? Will she keep sitting until ALL the eggs have hatched? Will too many eggs on the next cause the eggs not to hatch because the pile is too large?
We have had broody chickens but we have always separated them from the rest of the hens so nobody can add eggs to the pile. I wanted to try to leave the duck alone and not move her to a separate location if possible. This is our first time with hatching ducklings so any information that someone can send my way would be helpful.
I also read somewhere that ducks take about 27 days to hatch...is that accurate? All of our ducks are KCs.
Thanks!
