I think I mentioned Himself bought a new dog a few weeks back. Found out today the poor thing has heartworms 😔. So, the fun begins with treatment. -Oddly enough, of the othere 2 dogs, the one who has shunned his presence seemed to pity him tonight after his 2nd dose & actually curled up next to him to sleep.
Anyway, it reminded me of our discussion abt guineas & worms, as I was curious if they could get heartworms. - seems logical, but have not found evidence as of yet. Then again, cats can get them but they aren't physiologically suitable as long term hosts.
But here are a couple of articles about it: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/veterinary-science-and-veterinary-medicine/leucocytozoon
https://veterinary-practice.com/article/common-poultry-worms
And here is one re: to worm or not to worm. https://chooks.co.nz/blogs/news/sho...ou are worming as,(when egg numbers decline.)

Oh sorry, don't k ow anything about THAT type of worm...
Hopefully someone will be here to help to soon.

...and I was all ready to share about meal worms....*sigh*
Anyways! I hope you find help soon!
@aart ? (BTW, sorry I'm always tagging you bout this kinda stuff.... It must be super annoying)

I’m sorry that your dog is sick. It’s great that you took this pup in and are caring for it! Hopefully he will be successfully treated and do well with you. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. Birds don’t get heartworms, which are pretty specific to a few mammalian hosts.

However, poultry do get other disease spread by mosquitoes:

Best of luck to your pup!!!

Ugh, that is going to give me nightmares all summer😖

So sorry about your dog @Sydney65! I hope the meds work and your pup makes a full recovery.

I love summer but always forget how awful the bugs can be. Reading about the Buffalo gnats is giving me flash backs to a few years back when there was major flooding in the state. Counties couldn’t treat rivers like they normally do and we had a huge boom of Buffalo gnats. It was insane and so gross😖

Thanks to both of you. He is young & not showing signs of sickness yet so 🤞. Like you said, reading abt the treatment causes shudders. Right now he's on the pretreatment of antibiotics and steroids, mopey & pathetic acting - side effect of steroids.Knowing how bad the actual treatment can be -I'm trying not to be angry or judgmental; I remember being young & unable to afford surprise expenses, believing "that won't happen." But heartworms are a fact of life now, so not putting a dog on prevention is cruel, & selling w/o warning-. 20210325_082942.jpg As for the goons, turns out my obsession w/their feet/legs was a good thing,bc I started the ivermectin early on for scaley mites. I was reading an old chicken thread last night, & tx chickens x2 a year seems the norm.

One of our dogs was living in his own in the woods for months when he was rescued. He had heart worms. The worst part of treatment is trying to keep them quiet and not move around too much. We're in NC and mosquitos are ridiculous in the summer.
I hope your baby is feeling better soon ♥️

I'm trying to ease him into that now so that won't be an added surprise. He seems to like his crate and goes to it on his own. I'm hopeful his tx will be as you describe.
When I stepped away yesterday I heard this noise, and wondered why the fire dept was setting off their old Klaxon alarm bc they haven't used it in years. Yep, it was the pup.
I remember your mosquitoes. Lol. My sister lived there; I also remember going out to green pollen covered windshields after being greeted by an wandering little green tree frog stuck on the glass door. NOW we see tree frogs as well, but back then, that was pretty fascinating to a flatlander!

I haven’t had to deal with Buffalo gnats, but they really do sound awful!!!
