inhaling DE

How bad is it? My kids ripped open the bag and had a DE fight....right under daddy's nose.

I think i might kill my DH or make him sleep with the chickens

Hopefully everyone will be ok. I always wear a dust mask when using DE.

I always use a mask too. If they develop a cough I'd have them checked out by the doctor....or even call and talk to a doctor about it.

You need to call you pediatrician and ask them about your kids, not chicken folks- let them know if you have food grade or heat treated (pool/filter). Make sure they know the kids may have inhaled it, not just got some on them. The untreated DE is not good to breathe, but the treated DE is downright BAD and can cause serious illness.

Look up the MSDS for natural DE and flux calcined DE. Washing off the stuff on the skin, and drinking water to clear out the mouth (it is an irritant) is appropriate. Dr can help you if they breathed any.

they seem fine. Daddy said it was mostly on them but i still am feaked out! It was food grade DE. I know you can ingest but inhale

ok, read MDMS sheet/. Seems like long term inhaling is bad. I think they will be OK. To bad daddy won't!!

Silicosis is the lung disease associated with inhalation of silica particles (like those in calcined DE- natural DE is much lower in it) Chronic disease due to long term exposure of small amounts, an occupational hazard for some industries. Acute disease if you get a large amount over a short period of time. Give Daddy and kids a big lecture, call the pediatrician and see if they think you should take any special action or come in, and put the rest of the DE in a hidden spot. Put it in the secure cabinet/bin with the sprays and poisons, stuff to keep the kids out of.
