My Coop
My Coop
My cackle batch arrived yesterday (hatched Weds 3/23, arrived 3/25). That afternoon, my 6 yo kid left the brooder coop open and a blue jay snatched a chick (barred rock). I heard the distressed chirping after a while and managed to get her back in the coop under the mother hen brooder. One eye was a little bloody and both were closed. When I checked 10 minutes later she was sprawled on her side near the opening, when I went to scoop her out, she panicked, righted herself and went deep under. I had to leave and I wasn't able to check on her in the evening. This morning I just checked on all the chicks. She was deep in the back. Both eyes are still closed with one eye a little swollen. I fed her some yolk and water. With her being essentially blind I wonder if I need to keep her separate and hand feed? Any advice.

Well it is satisfactorily resolved after 48 hrs. For those interested, I took her inside the next morning as she was weak and essentially blind. I handfed her yolk on a spoon and water dropper of H2O with ACV + arnica & aconite homeopathics every few hrs (whenever she started chirping loud). (If I had ledum, I would have added that as well.) The swelling went down almost right away. She started opening her eyes a bit this morning. She was still demanding handfeeding and was at a loss what to do with the feed & water so I put another chick in with her to show her the ropes. By this afternoon, she was interested in starter feed and keeping her eyes open so I cleaned her up (yolk all over) and put them both back in the brooder.
