Hi! I have 4/5 week old chicks, first time! We have 7 total, 4 cream legbars, 2 barred rocks and 1 welbar. Everyone has been doing well and getting along, but our welbar, cookie, has been a bit of a loner. Today when I went to check on them I noticed that it seems she has missing feathers on her wing and it looks bloody/injured. I have no idea what could have caused this, I’ve never seen her be bullied. We are expanding to a bigger brooder, right now they are in a 40 gallon tank. What should I do from here? How do I treat the wound? She doesn’t like to be separated she absolutely freaks out. Any advice is helpful please! Attached pics

Hello! Once the other chicks see the blood on her wing, they will most likely begin pecking at her wing. It's best to seperate her from the others until she heals. However, if she becomes stressed when seperated, to the point of not eating or drinking, you could also try a heatless red light to make it difficult for the other chicks to see the blood. We use Vetericyn Plus Poultry Care Spray to treat minor wounds on our chickens. Hope this helps!

What do you think could have caused it to happen in the first place? Do you suspect she’s being bullied?

It is common for chicks to peck at each other, however, it's hard to say exactly what the cause is, especially if you have not noticed the others pecking at her. However, there are several potential causes for pecking such as curiosity, boredom, stress, overheating, too much light, nutritional deficiencies, and overcrowding.
