I have a barred Plymouth Rocket pullet about 6 wks old. Last night I think she injured her neck trying to jump out of the brooder box. This morning she was huddled in corner with head tucked in. It would shake when she moved her neck. I took her to our vet who does not normally handle chickens. The vet manipulated the chicken's neck. Chicken somewhat improved while waiting in office. Was sitting on the edge of the box , looking around and looking for something to eat. Has some problem when she tries to preen her breast area, kind of gets off balance. The vet gave her a shot of Rimadyl and one of Butorphanol As she injects the bird she say I should Not eat her. Since I am trying to raise her for the eggs- After looking up Butorphanol on the internet - website says WARNING:
Butorphanol tartrate is not for use in food-producing animals. I am suppose to give 5 additional shots of Butorphanol (0.7 mls every 6-8 hrs) and 5 more shots of Rimadyl (0.11 mls subcutaneously every 12 hrs for pain and inflamation)

my questions are:
1)Have I ruined this chicken for egg production or can I not give the rest of the meds and it will work out of the chicken's system by the time she starts laying.
2) what about the Rimadyl- can't get enough info on this one.
3) Is this over medication- should I medicate or do a wait and see.

She is currently standing and eating chick crumbles in a isolation box.

Please help- very attached to my chicks

Sorry I don't know much about these kind of things. A lot of vet supplies seem to be used off label. I would continue to treat her with the meds, and just not eat the eggs for a couple weeks after the last dose. Unless I had some info stating otherwise. You might want to call an avian vet with these ?s. He/she would be the best source of specific info. I really don't think you ruined your chicken, and it's great that you care enough to take her to the vet.

Glad you stopped by.

Most neck type symptoms in chickens are caused by a vitamin deficiency or illness. I give vitamin e gel caps dripped in beak and a good liquid vitamin. Not sure about the vet meds.
