First off, this is a rather scary section to read through, I don't like thinking about all the things that can go wrong with my chicken!

My adopted chicken got attacked by the neighbors rooster, pretty brutally too. It almost looks like her back was skinned, all the feathers were removed all the way down to the flesh. I hope that they grow back. Today was the first day that I mustered up the courage to handle her, I admit to being a germ-aphobic, which is not good considering I live on a farm. I was happily surprised at how soft she is, and plan to handle her more to get her more social. Anyway, I lifted up her wing to find a large wound what I can only guess was once an abscess. Its covered in black and yellow crust. Should I leave this alone since it appears to be healing, or is there anything I should put on it? It sniffed it and it doesn't smell infected, it actually smelled like cooked chicken, which was kind of creepy. Other than that she appears to be very healthy, despite her ordeal.

Chickens are amazingly resilient. If there is no apparent abscessation or infection and only a healing wound, I would leave her alone. Keep her seperate from any roosters as mating attempts will aggravate the situation. If she is eating, I think that she is well on the way to recovery.

I plan to stay away from roosters, they sound like more than I have the knowledge to deal with, or the area to keep seperate from the hens.
