Injured chickens after dog attack

I came out of my house yesterday and found a dog that we have never seen before 2 days ago chewing on one of my hens. I got over to find her dead so we went looking for the other 11 hens. After a 6 hour search we found 3 dead and 5 injured and 4 not injured. They range in the ages of 6 months to 5 years old. The injured ones (some worse than others) all have tears and holes in their back and one also has a broken wing on top of those injuries she is 5 yrs old and the one that is injured the worst is wheezing and i think she might have a punctured lung she is also 5yrs old, the other 3 injured are 1is 2 yrs old and 2 are 6 months. I am frustrated and very saddened by all of this and vet is not an option. All 5 injured made it through the night. I do not have any pictures yet. By the time we found them all and put the survivors up it was dark out. Will be doing a more thorough look at them today and cleaning them up more. Any help is appreciated.
Had to make a very tough decision this morning. We are going to put Bella down. I think it's the best thing for her unfortunately. They all made it through the night but she is wheezing more and she now has maggots in her wound. She's the one with a punctured lung 😢. The other three are still doing alright and are still maggot free. Hopefully it stays that way. Definitely going to miss our Big Boss Lady Bella. I'm actually surprised she's made it this long with that wound.

I am so irate right now. We found out who the dog that attacked our chickens belongs to. She came by last night and said sorry which doesn't feel like anything after losing 5 chickens and still having 3 injured. Even more so after finding out a bit ago that it has killed quite a few other chickens from other neighbors recently not just ours.

So sorry. Some people are just not very responsible for their animals. I had to threaten a neighbor once, after talking to them many times, that if I saw the dogs loose again on my property I would have no choice but to shoot them. In that case, that took care of it. Sadly, some people would get really upset if something happened to their dog, but are numb to the pain their dog might have caused someone else. Do you have animal control where you live, that can address the owners? Rules, laws and enforcement can vary a lot place to place, best to know what options you have or don't have. If nothing else, you can make the threat, if it's legal to shoot to protect livestock where you are. Why people do not secure their dogs, I will never understand. If it were an "accident" there would not be multiple victims. If it's loose again, it will likely return to the places where it had so much "fun".
The only thing you can really control is the security of your flock. If possible I'd try to provide them with a place that dogs can't get into easily. I spent a lot making my enclosure secure from stray dogs. We get them a lot, I pick them up on game camera's going through my property at night pretty often. If they get in my pasture my donkey will take care of them, my house dogs (big un's) take care of around the house, my birds are behind a 7' fence.

Yes we have animal control and have leash laws in our area. We are allowed to shoot to protect also. We have a pen connected to our coop which has a roof also the only way to get in is through the gate or the door to the coop. But we let our chickens free range in our yard which we have a fence around also but one if not both the gates to the driveway is always open. We have trees and bushes covering inside and out on three sides of the fence and they mainly stay inside the fenced parts of our yard. Even if they had all made it back into the coop the dog could have still fit through they're smaller opening from the coop to the pen

I have no advice to offer but just wanted to say I’m sorry this happened to you. This happened to me in February, a hiker’s dog killed 3/10 of my chickens in the span of 2 minutes. One of the survivors had her tail bitten off but survived.

Stuff like this is really devastating. I hope your injured hens will recover quickly!

Thank you, I'm sorry you had to go through it also. One thing that makes me mad is people who think oh their just chickens like their not as important as any other pet like cats and dogs but to some of us their just as special. Yes we started keeping them mostly for the eggs but we hand raised them all from babies and their just as special to me as my cats and we just lost half our flock.
