I have never encountered this before and do not know what it is. This duck was walking around with the others like this today. We caught it to get a better look. What could this growth type thing be, and what should we do about it? I washed the area well and sprayed a bit of Blue Kote on. We have it in a pen by itself. It doesn't appear to be sick. Just injured. Thanks.

Not really sure where the blood came from, but hanging down thing seems to be in tact. Tumor type thing is what we were wondering. Some of these ducks have a tuft on top of the head so we wondered if it was about that. Maybe got pulled on or caught on something. This hanging down thing is barely attached with a very thin string. I wondered about tying it off. Don't think vet is an option at this time.

My husband thought cyst. Can't be sure if the blood on it is from inside of just some I didn't get washed off.

This might be a long shot?..Do you have a Drake?.
Your Duck is Crested and to me it looks like breeding damage. Crested Ducks are a deformity of the skull. It's doesn't fully close. That's what creates the crest.

I was going to say the same thing actually. I’m not an eXperia by any means but my first thought was that the little bean-looking-fleshy part that is hanging is the fat tissue that typically covers the crested ducks’ brains.

And like Chickens Really said; I too also immediately thought of a drake doing the damage while mating.

I’m not 100% certain on any of this (in fact, dealing with my own poor duck) but wanted to say I think Chickens’ response was spot on.

How to go about mending it? I don’t know if that little bean shaped ball of tissue will reattach/regrow or not so I’d wait on snipping it off at the moment until you can confirm whether that needs reattached via sutures or something (IMO). You can tell that at one point the feathers were surrounding that bean; as evidenced by the little feathers seeming to stick out of it. I would suggest typical wound care be done to the rest of it in the meantime.

I wish you the best of luck! Your pretty little baby has such a darling profile and eyes.

Thank you all. Good points. Yes, we do have drakes and the ducks are old enough to have paired up. This little sweetheart didn't have much of a crest, just the few little feathers you see here. That was my first thought since that is the spot where the drakes will grab a mouth full. We let her go to bed with the rest of the ducks last night and she seems fine this morning. Just don't know what will happen with that hanging down thing. If that is supposed to be covering her little brain hopefully she won't be a bit dingy now, but if she is we will love her anyway. This is her mate. Now that's a crest!
