It’s been a while since I have posted; I reduced my flock to 3 drakes a few years ago and haven’t had any trouble with them, until recently. One of my drakes, Chocolate (Khaki Campbell, 5.5-6 years old), started limping last week. Last time this happened and we took him to the vet there wasn’t much they could tell us but prescribed a broad spectrum antibiotic and gabapentin for pain. They told us to bring him in if it got any worse; that was almost $200 and the next day, Choc wasn’t limping as much, and within a few days he was fine- that was a few months ago. I’m not sure what happened as our ducks free range and take walks in the forest behind our home or venture to the neighbors property; they ALWAYS come when I call them. We hoped Choc would get better with rest so we separated him from Frankie & Johnny. We’re unsure how he injured his leg, Johnny has been very aggressive this Spring & Summer, and had been caught trying to have relations with Choc in their large pool. Choc got out and on the ramp and Johnny was still on top of him by the time I got to them; there’s also a small hole in their cage, near the pool, my husband just hadn’t gotten around to it. Anyway, we separated Choc from the other two, and would take him out the cage only if someone was outside while he was out. He was using his leg a little but now doesn’t use it at all. I don’t know what to do or how I can help him. We take him out his cage and put him in the pool throughout the day; we then, place him in a low box with a dry towel beneath him, he will use his wings to help him balance and get comfortable but isn’t able to groom like he usually does. I’m getting worried about him and unsure what, if anything I can do to help him. I can’t afford another $200+, at this very moment. Any tips on caring for him or anything I can do to make him comfortable…please help.
