I have 10 silver Appleyard ducklings. They are about a week old. My smallest seems to have sprained her leg/foot... the toes/web seems fine, no swelling, but she is not putting weight on it, and is holding it sort of out to the side... She is the friendliest of the ducklings, so I am really hoping not to have to cull her.

I have had a few splayed legs chicks... normally that is both legs... and this is just the one... should I try taping it? or does anyone else have suggestions or ideas of what the issue may be?

Thanks so much for your comments, PLEASE HELP!

Ducks are very prone to leg and foot issues. My recommendation is to remove her from the other babies, put her in a warm area where you can minimize her need for movement. Then just be patient, give her some time. A water soluble vitamin solution for poultry may speed the healing process. Hope this helps!

Thanks HumbleHen,
I will move her and one other to keep her company into another tub... it appears worse this evening than it was yesterday. Looks like the "elbow" joint. and I have no idea if I can splint it or even if I should. I'm going to get some blue Emu oil, as that helps my husband when his joints swell, I don't think it can hurt.

@shroomlover Something is likely going on inside her mouth - some of the reasons could include injury from biting something sharp, or even something stuck inside the top of the bill. I would get some help from someone who knows how to properly examine the top of the bill, and take a look.

If you don't already have some apple cider vinegar in the drinking water, I would start with a tablespoon ACV per gallon of water. She may need antibiotics. But I would not rule out something stuck in there, or some kind of injury.

Also, I strongly urge you to post this over on the Duck Forum. There are many good minds experienced with ducks and ducklings there.

Can you get a video or photo posted, over on the Duck Forum? Many of us concentrate on checking that forum and lose track of the Emergencies Forum.

I would give poultry vitamins in the water twice a week, closely supervised swim time in warm water, and consider some kind of brace. Ducklings often have B vitamin deficiency, usually niacin, sometimes thiamine. Not all ducklings have the same needs, so feeding chick starter, we see many cases of niacin deficiency on the Duck Forum.

This is also a good resource https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry but please share your situation with the Duck Forum - collectively much more knowledge than one duck person has.
