A neighbor brought me a gosling that they found by the lake. They've been watching it for 2 days and it hasn't moved far and all the other geese left it, so they picked it up today. I believe he has a ruptured tendon in one knee b/c the joint is very floppy...doesn't seem to have any broken bones though. The other leg works just fine and he can scoot along, but can't stand up all the way. I'm afraid if I splint it that it will freeze in place when it heals and he'll be in even worse shape. Any ideas for him? He also hasn't figured out how to eat the waterfowl food. He will eat bread (probably b/c people feed them bread down by the lake)...I'm assuming he'll figure out the feed in a while?

If he isn't a wild breed bird wildlife might not take him. In that case keep him in a confined area where he can't run around a whole lot. Vitamins in the water help too as I assume he is still drinking. I have had geese that hurt/sprained their legs and I confine them so they can't roam everywhere as they like to and make it worse, they all have healed given enough cage rest. You could try supporting it with a wrap or something but I'm betting the goose would just chew it off. If he can operate the leg a little bit (even a weak half kick when handled- I look to see if they have any power to move the leg and if they can bend the joints if even only a tiny bit on their own) this means that he can that those parts are still operational, it just hurts to and he doesn't want to. Cage rest for a couple weeks may allow him to heal that up. If he flat out can't make the leg move and bend no matter what I'd be more worried about whether he has more substantial damage maybe to the hip area or something that you can't feel.
