Hello, I just found you guys today thanks to an injured rooster we have. Did a google search and here you all are.

We've been raising chickens for a few years and I had some when I was a kid but this injury stuff is new to me. We have a rooster that some how got a string wraped around his leg. It must have been there for a week or longer and we never saw it.

My wife and daughter held him real still and I carefuly cut the string off his leg a few threads at a time. Below the string was swelled up really bad and started leaking "water" from the wound. We have him in his own pen right now, away from the others.

What is the best thing to do in this case? Leave it open? Cover it? Use Neosporine or bag Balm? I want to do what I can to help him but at the same time I'm not going to spend $100.00 plus at the vets to do it. I'm not sure yet if I can post a pic on here or how to do it but I can try if need be.

Hello from Kansas and welcome aboard.

I'm certainly not a chicken doc but I think a thorough cleaning and a disinfecting is the first order of business. I would also think covering it to keep in clean and changing the dressing at least once a day. Chickens can be pretty darn resiliant. Find the diseases and injuries thread on this site - you can't be the first person to have had this happen. Type in 'leg injury' and see what you can learn. Best of luck to you and your rooster!

Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad to have you aboard. I agree keep it clean and wrap it. I picked up a gel like stuff from TSC made for wounds. Keeping flies off the wound is important. Good luck. :thumbsup

Hello and welcome to BYC

Good luck with your rooster!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan - give his leg a good soak twice daily in some warm water and Epsom salts, then apply an antibiotic (either would work fine). If his circulation was damaged, unfortunately he may loose the leg, but treat him and see how he does. Good luck.

Thanks for all your help. Kept it clean and kept him from the other chickens for a few days. His leg still looks a little swollen but it's a lot better and he is getting around really well.
