Hi there sorry to be asking advice after only just joining but i have a runner duck that cant put any weight on her leg and when trying to hobble anywhere she kind of swings her leg out which makes me think it could be a hip problem, she is around a year old and other wise healthy, she is eating but not going down to the stream to drink she will lie down and drink from a muddy puddle instead.......what im asking is ........what can i do, if anything... i cant strap it up as i dont really know where the actual damage is, and if i did she would be unable to lie down, i dont really want to seperate her from the flock, if i did i would bring her drake in with her, but feel this could stress her out even more.........
realistically is there anything you can do or is it best t not interfer, she has been like this for 5 days now......

Any advice greatly recieved.

If you can put her in an enclosure where she has limited movement. as long as she is still running around it will take longer to heal, sometimes rest, warm water therapy, Epsom salt compresses will help and also I'd give her some vitamins in her water to help keep her immune system up.Warm water therapy helps to get the weight off the leg and also helps to build muscle back when there has been an injury. of course bring a buddy with her for company. Have you examined the leg for injuries? looked at her foot for bumble foot? and Welcome to BYC.

Oh thank you so much, both those replys are brilliant the web site is so informative and will keep it to hand for future reference, and i will for sure put her in a much smaller enclosure in the morning with her buddy........maybe i should also bring her in for a nice swim around the bath, kind of duck hydrotherapy.....worth a go, i feel for sure she would love a swim around but getting down to the stream is a real effort for her...thank you so much for the replys and its put a smile on my face instead of a worried frown.. i just hate not being able to fix poorly things.......oh i forgot to say in my introduction that im a qualified Homeopath so once i have her closer to me i will administer some homeopathy and hope that will help along with the vitamins as suggested, are there any good vitamins for poultry or is it a case of look around for a good general poultry vitamin?

I use poultry vitamins with electrolytes and probiotics. You probably already know about apple cider vinegar. I hope it's just a pulled muscle or something else minor. I like baths because I can watch the duck closely.

Hi A, and ductucplease keep us updated on how she is doing.. I'd say she is in good hands.
