New to here, but my Tom is injured....pretty bad.He keeps bullying my dog and has been trapping her in her dog house, pecking her, and running her off. She does everything to avoid him. But he continues to pick on her. Well, today she had enough and now he is pretty bad off. He is still walking around and we have decided to put him down (the tom). Since, even after he got it pretty good, he STILL is picking on the dog. Is he trying to protect the flock of chickens that he is amongst? The dog has never harmed any of them.

Most likely he was trying to protect his flock, I'm sure he thought the dog was a danger.I would think about trying to keep the dog and chickens separate if possible.even if you think the dogs not dangerous.good luck.

Dogs and poultry should always be kept apart. I'm not blaming your dog, sounds like she just snapped after being attacked, etc. The Tom thinks he is protecting his flock from predators. Are you in a high predator area? If not maybe you will want to rehome the Tom/ replace him.

Welcome to BYC!

I'm sorry to hear your Tom was injured, I think he was just doing his job (protecting the flock) and he saw the dog as a threat. Dogs and poultry don't mix unless the dog has been properly trained to either guard the birds or steer clear of them. Your situation is a common scenario we see here often.

If you don't think the Tom can be treated and heal from his wounds then you'll have to cull him.

Good luck to you, thanks for joining us.

Well we haven't culled him yet because he acts like NOTHING is wrong! Is there a chance he can get sick and spread it to the flock? Btw... Tom still walks right up to the dog (that used to sleep in the coop with the birds when they were littler)

He's trying to protect the flock..for sure! I just had 4 of my chicks mauled badly by a Pomeranian, believe it or not..do not mix chickens with predators!! Just a word up to those who believe they are the best of friends..they're not, they're just waiting for the right time to attack.
Now, getting back to my chicks. One died as soon as I walked in, the other 3 I took in the house while keeping their body temps up wrapped in paper towels, since paper towels were all I had on hand. Their heads were hanging but still moving around, I rubbed them until they were warm and put them in a carrier one @ a time! Took them in and put them in a quiet warm room and used peroxide on their wounds.
For the first 5-7 days the cuts need to be washed with blue Dawn, watch the eyes! After washing the wound/wounds use peroxide until the affected area looks whitefish around the perimeter. Also watch for an odor and discharge! Keep the pen clean and separate from each other until cuts and abrasions are healed! Chickens will peck @ anything and that'll cause infection, so until completely healed keep chickens away from flock and each other ;-) Chickens will act ok until close to death because that's part of survival!!
Take the bird away from the dog if not too late..
