Injuries Rooster

Hi, I have a 9 month year old Silkie rooster he got attacked by a raccoon during the early hours of the day when I let them out of their run to explore our fenced backyard. We cooked breakfast and took a nap and around 1:30 I went outside to him laying in a mud puddle freezing so I immediately grabbed him and washed all the mud off him. And blew dried him he didn’t seem to be getting any better so we took him to the Vet, she said because he wasn’t getting up and it looks as if he had no energy she told us to just euthanize him. But he didn’t give up protecting his girlfriends so I said no we would try to help him. It’s day 3 at this point and we been giving him water and antibiotics with painkillers twice a day. He is in a dog kennel separated but he’s struggling to eat so we got him small chick food that’s basically dust and electrolyte water. But now he has energy to flap his wings super hard. But he’s still having difficulties holding up his head…. And just don’t know what l should do.

First up I just wanted to say how proud of you I am for not giving up on him so easily. Even though it's going to be probably really hard to care for him I'm glad you're determined to help him. What you should do is make a "baby jumper" for him but make sure his feet are touching the ground. It MAY help him stand but it may take a while. Here's a human baby picture for reference so it can help. Continue with the electrolyte drink though and instead of chick feed try getting duck pellets and crush it up for him. It may contain more nutrients than chick feed that may be essential for his growth.

I guess the questions I have is, is this awry neck or is his neck problem? Or is he just still sore from the whole attack?

If he's had it before the fox attack then it is wry neck if not it's probably a neck injury. Maybe try B12 (B12 is known to help with head injuries so try it for him) you can either mix it in with the chick food by crushing the pill mixing it in water until it becomes liquid and then mix it in.

Can you please post some photos of the cockerel?

If he's having a hard time eating, try making his feed into a wet mash.
What antibiotics and painkillers did the vet give you?

Silkies can have a lot of trouble when they have been attacked or even just a peck on the head. I would get some vitamins into him. 400IU Vitamin E and 1/4 tablet B-Complex. Give him scrambled egg once a day as well. Video below shows how to help him eat, if this doesn't work, you can crop/tube feed him.

He may benefit from being in a sling for short periods of time throughout the day.

That first video is exactly how he is acting. I work in the morning and I’ll take a photo and video of him when I check on him.

I'm so sorry but it may mean that your rooster may pass away soon. It happened to my leghorn too she had a snot consistency in her mouth as well and then she passed away within 10 minutes while I was holding her. Fingers crossed that he will survive though

Can you get some better photos of the inside of his beak?
Is his crop emptying overnight?

Does this fluid/snot have a bad odor? Can you wipe out the material that's inside his beak?


Trying to determine if he has Canker, yeast or if that can possibly be a buildup of wet feed inside his beak if he's having difficulty eating.
