The neighbor's dog from down the road killed two of my chickens and injured this one. Feathers and hide have been striped from his back. What should I do? He is eating, drinking and walking around. He just softly "talks" every once in a while like he's in pain.

I would attach a picture, but I can't figure out how to do that on here for some reason. If any of you know how, please fill me in.

Thanks!

your rooster will be ok if he is eating and drinking, give hime some time to heal.

Get an antibiotic spray with pain relief down at your local walmart and spray the injuries just like you would for a human.

If you have any other chickens you might find that they will start picking at the injured bird, if this happens separate the injured bird out, the healthy chickens may end up killing it.

You also might get some pedolyte and give it to the bird instead of water. Chickens can be over come by stress.

hope there are no internal injuries, and the bird should recover.

Sorry to read about this, I have lost several small flocks of chickens and turkeys to dogs so I know how it feels.

Thank you so much...here he is...it looks worse in person.

oh geez sorry - can you confine him??

our RIR hen had a similar injury. we treated with obvious first aid, put her in a smaller cage, and covered her so she felt like she was hiding. it took a week or so but she healed up just fine.

sorry about that. hope you went down and talked to the neighbors.

I would talk to the neighbors but I can't get close to their house b/c of the 3 pitt bull mixes they have. I am pretty mad, though...this is not the first time...AND they killed my best rooster!!! Aaaagggghhhh...I could scream! Sorry, I am usually more docile.

go ahead and scream honey. its ok.

honestly i'd make a report with animal control. if those dogs are out of control - what else are they going to do? if there is a history whoever or whatever they do next cant be a 'one time thing.'

sorry about your roo - give us an update tomorrow
:)

Sorry to hear about your chickens. This has happened many times to us as our next door neighbors have two dogs that like to escape their fencing and come into OUR YARD to play with our chickens.

Although it make look bad and turn your stomach to look at it, chickens are pretty hardy. I agree with the other posters that a little extra care for this one is needed. Ours healed up in time and you cannot tell any of them were bitten (even the one that was missing a chunk of skin and flesh about 2x3 inches and had all of its tail torn off). We didn't know about all the things you could do like medicine and pedialite, etc so we just babied them.

Keep them dry and warm and clean and in time your chicken will be back to normal. Oh and we kept ours penned up whenever it happened to keep them from getting into too much harm.

I hope it goes well for you.

Thank you. I believe that in our county, though, if you live in the rural areas that is out of Animal Control's jurisdiction...they would just say, "Sorry 'bout your bad luck -- get a gun." That's the TX way...

Thank you all! I'll tell you...I am a nurse, but since this isn't a human injury I didn't know what to do...silly, huh?

BTW, please help me ID a new little chick on another post of mine in "What Breed Is This?" posted at 5:14 today, entitled "What breed is this chick?"

Appreciate y'all!
