Came home to a barred rock hen looking mighty beat up. We do have roosters we are trying to get rid of soon. Is this an injury that will heal on its own or something more serious?

Looks like it is the result of a rough rooster. Could be that once red was showing others pecked at it. Do you have any other hens or pullets i this condition? I would put the roosters in a bachelor pad separate from the hens until you rehome, if that's your intention. Best to put them somewhere they can't see the hens so they don't fight with each other. At least that's what I've heard. I haven't had more than one until now and mine are still young cockerels. Your hen will be okay. Feathers probably wont grow back until she molts. How old is she? Did she molt this fall?

Thank you! I don’t believe she has molted yet this fall. We have 50 so kind of hard to tell. Will keep an eye on her and try to get rid of the roosters ASAP. The broody hens were too cute this spring and we ended up with way too many many Roos

At least separate most of the cockerels to a different area or put them in some pens with food and water. Pine tar or BluKote applied to the area might help prevent pecking of the red skin, but avoid the preen or oil gland that you can see toward the end of the back of the wound.
