So Friday morning we woke up to a hatched chicken. It took a day but he is wobbling about on his feet. Problem is, he was born with over an inch long blood vessel attached to his rear ended. The blood vessel came off last night, but a huge blood clot that covered his entire backside was dried on.

today I took a good look and the clot was stuck on firm. It was never going to fall off in time for him to eat and poop. So, I ran his little bottom under warm dripping water until the clot got soft and could be picked off. I have put him back in the incubator with a small amount of electrolyte water and some chick food crumbles.

i didn’t know what else to do. Without it being cleaned up it could never poo. Also, when I cleaned him off, it looked like he had a little light green stuff on his button.

Thanks so much for your second opinion. I have had to put fully grown hens down but am new to hatching and not sure what to do.

You can take a good sharp pair of scissors, or plant clippers, & cut off the head.

Or if you don't want the mess, you can do the cervical dislocation method. Snapping the spine at the base of the head. It's a quick pull, fast, & painless.

Thank you for your marvelous advise and support. I said a prayer and sent Inky home. I am 62, garden and can anything in sight plus have had backyard chickens for many years. But never tried hatching before. Guess all is not perfect in the world of hatching.

You're welcome.
Now the chick will no longer suffer.

Yep, nothing is perfect. Especially with incubation.
