Iam looking to switch my little chickens over to organic and get them certified but unfortanly I cant find any infromation about this I have searched so many web sites and talked to tons of people on the phone with each saying they will get back to me.

I have found laws about switching dairy cattle over to organic but not my egg layers.

Iam in california so look for federal and state laws on this.

If any one can point me to the laws and regulations i would really be thank ful.

Tks james unfortanly I currently have all that info iam searching to see if my current chickens can be convereted to Organic.

Personaly I dont see a problem with it if a dairy cow that produces milk is allowed to be convereted why couldnt a chicken that produces eggs but I have yet to find anything that states that.

Check with your local county extension agent....each state is different for certification and inspection costs.

Organic eggs mean that you are feeding them certified organic feed. You can call them organic eggs if you are doing this, and still not be certified, but you must clarify that they're not "certified" organic.

Unfortunately, even if you have given your chicks medicated feed then they cannot be certified as organic. You have to not spray fertilisers / herbicides / pesticides on the ground they range on for three years, make sure that adjoining fields / gardens aren't sprayed, feed them on organic food for life, and then if you give them any treats, then they have to be organic too. This is really to get certified organic with the soil association or equivalent, but if you want to switch to organic as much as possible for yourself then just switching to organic food is a good way to go.
