Innovative chicken brooders

My brooder is going to be out in an unfinished room next to the garage. Dust will not be an issue, since it's not a main living space, just a chick and storage room.

This is my progress so far today. Not bad for an hour of work.

If I can scrounge enough wood, I'll be able to make a second level. Plus, it's going on wheels so it can easily be moved around. No more chick poop all over the floor!
Sweet!

Looks great Junebuggena! Those are some lucky chicks! I wish I handy... Alas I have to rely on my husband who thankfully is...

I start my chicks in plastic tubs on wire storage rack, adjust the shelf height and the shelf become the lid...

As they grow I move them into one of these pet store dog/cat display crates, flipped so the doors are on top... It's a leftover from when I used to sell exotic animals for a living, so it was free and collecting dust, likely far to expensive to be purchased new for this use...

Then they go out to the coop, in these brooder/breeder pens...

Oooh...how do you like using the covered litter boxes for nesting?

Didn't like the initial investment as I know there are plenty of cheaper options, but beyond the cost I have no regrets, they work very well and I really like the ability to easily remove them and power spray them clean when needed...

Also in anticipation of the first eggs I started to purchase one box a week, so the cost was spread out and not a lump sum...

I actually already have a bunch of used ones in storage from doing cat rescue work. I found that the concrete mixing tubs worked better in a group housing arrangement. Hmmm...food for thought...
