We just had our coop built this morning and I'm working on the run. I am so new to this and am confused as to what to use inside the coop. Hay in the nesting boxes I know- but what do you put on the floor of the coop itself?
I would do some searching and reading but just don't have the time at this moment!
Thanks,
Ellen

I use pine shavings. Rice hulls are also good. I use the Deep Litter Method, with a "poop" tray (a boot tray) placed under the roosts, and also filled with pine shavings.

My coop is basically 4x8 and one bale of pine shavings (sold in compressed bales) is the perfect size for it. I just finished this coop and bought two bales, but only needed one for the first go-round.

From the reading i've been doing here, most people use wood shavings. Do not get cedar. You can buy them by the bale at most feed stores. You can add a little stall dri and/or DE to keep moisture down, control insects. Congrats on the coop, mine is still a work in progress.

The wind is blowing here today, so I'm not out working on it, instead I am

getting more ideas and information. Good luck

I use pine shavings in my nestboxes, but sand on my coop floor (as well as in my runs). I like sand because it's so easy to clean with a kitty litter scoop. I have a poop tray under the roost, and cleanup takes only a few minutes every morning, and my coop is spic and span.
