I recently adopted an older flock of hens (2+ years old). I want to get a rooster and there is one available that's about 6 week's old. Is this going to be an issue where he gets picked on due to his youth? I also plan to start now integrating younger hens. I've read a lot about integrating but am curious if the age of the rooster is a problem. Love this site!!!

Easiest for us. Not necessarily easy for them.

I do agree, chickens will be chickens. I’m keeping my guy engaged with them when I can supervise. As long as there’s no blood/feathers or incessant whupping I let it go. He roosted with them last night. I made sure I was up at dawn to keep the peace also.

He doesn’t go out of the coop/run yet. So today has been non eventful. Tonight I’ll intervene again when I can supervise.

I look forward to hearing how it goes! I'll post how my experience goes as well... and yes, agree a good balance between "easy" and safe :)

Big Chief is getting along okay with the girls but not getting a lot of lovin... initially he was picked on a little bit but one of the bullies is one of the few that he's gotten a hold of and now she's hanging with him. He hasn't gone in the coop yet and, like a gentleman, slept in a covered area outside the coop last night.... making sure there is extra food and water around for him.

At 6 weeks old?!
That's pretty amazing!
