Integrating breeds

Hi, i am brand new to the forums and I have alot of questions about raising chickens. I would firstly like to know if anyone could answer the question as to whether or not different breeds of chickens. For example, would it be okay to integrate in one coop easter eggers, silkies, bantams, and standard sized egg layers?

Lots of people have mixed breeds (and sizes) in their flocks.

The only reason to keep them separated is if you want to breed certain breeds.

You betcha! All the birds in my signature statement live together in one compound of four coop structures inside a large run. And they free range in my entire back yard during the day.

I wanted a colorful flock and I have one!

Hi,

I also want a colorful flock! I only have 6 girls now and I want to add 6 more but I would like to get different breeds. How are your girls doing in your flock that are the only one of their breed? Are they by themselves or are they all just one big happy family? I've been told that I should never get just one of a certain breed but there are so many different breeds that I want but my neighbors wouldn't be happy if my flock tripled in size.

I have a small flock, but all different breeds/colors. Joon is my 12 week old Barred Rock, she is the 'boss' of the current duo. Munk is my 12 week Easter Egger, all pullets, and Munk is lower on the pole, always sticks by Joons side and such. They are very bonded. Today I will be getting 2 Blue Wyandottes and 2 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes to add to the duo. I think everybody will do fine though, so far the EE and BR seems close and not to have any breedism's

I have several singles of breeds. Oddly enough, the only chickens which sidle off to be all by themselves are the two Lakenvelders! But not to be TOGETHER, this is separately. Like they're loners. (I think they had a falling out some months ago, but neither will tell me what it was about.....)

Everybody toodles around in the yard either with another buddy or two, or comes back to be with other chickens after brief periods on their own. Doesn't matter which breed they are. They do tend to hang out with those which were in the brooder at the same time as they had been.

I have 29 ladies, 13 different breeds of chickens - including bantams. They get along great; I introduced them in groups no smaller than 5 at a time, spaced over two months. The last and newest group of 7 (3 different breeds) is just getting aclimated and hanging out with the flock. They all lay together to sun bathe - some will break off into smaller groups. My biggest brat is one of my little blue silkies. She's fearless! (even pecks at my Jersey Giant)

I have many different breeds of chickens living together (I only have standard sized chicks .. no bantams for me). I have black australorps, blue laced red wyandottes, buff rocks, columbian wyandottes, delawares, new hampshire reds, partridge rocks, production reds, turkens and white orpingtons. No problems there.
