Interest in changing Chesapeake, VA chicken keeping code

Let's get 'er done!

Brent, any luck? Please update.

In the next few days, I will research the steps that need to be taken to get the law changed. If I don't post back, someone remind me.

If any of you are interested, I belong to a great homesteading group. Just go to Facebook or Meetup and search for "Virginia Urban Homesteaders League."

I'm writing to see whatever came of your situation in Chesapeake. We are in Virginia Beach and unfortunately do not live in an area zoned for chickens. We would love to see the ordinances changed. Any information you can offer from what you went through would be greatly appreciated!

The gentleman at the Ag. Extension told me they only investigated if they got complaints. So if your neighbors are ok with it, you're probably not going to run into an issue.

If you go to change.org you will find an on-line petition for Virginia Beach, for what it's worth. Not sure how much 'clout' it holds with the powers that be.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chesapeake-Virginia-Backyard-Chickens/334236733254583 If you are on Facebook, please "like" the "Chesapeake, Virginia, Backyard Chickens" page that I've started there. There seems to be quite a bit of interest on this thread, but some of it is almost a year old. Let's see if we can use the FB page to get some fresh energy into this. I live in Chesapeake and very much want to see the 3 acre rule changed if we can organize a strategy.

If Facebook is an issue for you, let me know, and we can try to organize using this thread. Does anyone know what happened to the petition or was any request ever made of city council?

Hi- I'm in Arlington Va. We also have restrictive zoning ordinances that preclude almost everyone from owning chickens. I'm involved with a group called The Arlington Egg Project that is working to have the county ordinances modified to allow a limited number of hens (no roosters). You might get some ideas from their website ArlingtonEggProject.org. Good luck!

Brent,

Our family is interested in having chicken at our home. We currently have 9 chickens at a friends house/farm in Hickory until we are set for the chickens.

I noticed your post from back in 2011, however we are interested in signing the list and supporting efforts to allow chickens in residential zoning, our community is zoned R25(AS).

Thank you for your efforts.

V/r,

Steve Jones
