Interested in breeding "fancy" chickens

I am doing this. I chose showgirls/silkies. There is always a high demand for them as chicks and POL. I started with very high quality eggs, hatched, kept my pick and sold the rest. More than covered my costs. I'm only in my first year so am on the 3rd round of hatching other breeders eggs. This will give me a good base to work from, and I can then start to create my own lines from next year.

If you pick the right breeds demand will be there for chicks, especially if they are sensibly priced. Showgirls are very rare in the UK and I could sell my chicks ten times over. I have managed to rehome any unwanted cockerels so far as well as although the market is limited its still there for good quality stock.

I also plan on DNA gender testing once I get up near the maximum I want to keep. They are notoriously hard to sex, so by doing that I can ensure I keep exactly what I want in order to continue.

I also have some seramas. They are tiny, come in all sorts of flamboyant colours and are ideal for a garden breeding flock. My cock crows so quietly that no one has ever or could ever complain. They are also incredibly friendly and love to be picked up and fussed with. And again demand is very high where I am so eggs and chicks sell easily.

Welcome to Backyard chickens - in USA seems like it is very difficult to find homes for cockererls/roosters. It's advisable to find a good outlet for them - maybe a local farmer who will take roosters before you start.

Thank you for the feedback!
I am really not trying to make money or anything - and I'm not trying to be a hardcore breeder either. You don't think that is possible on a really small scale?
I honestly just want to make "pretty" chickens for my own enjoyment, not for profit.
Research malaysian serama..they r a cute friendly pet quality breed and the roosters crow is a lot "lower". Plus u can breed silkie and frizzles ones.

Oh yeah I was just reading about these!
They seem to stand really funny? But yeah I am thinking about getting them for my first batch.
They have different body types..heres a pic of my 12oz rooster...these are more common. There r shows just for them all over the country. I think the ones bred to have that weird posture is well..weird. I sell them pretty well..and there's such a variety of colors and feather type they are fun. They're sweet, easy to keep and don't eat much..not to mention..the tinder chicks r just adorable.
